Hi, when booting up my PC, it first counts my RAM
Then the cpu cache or something.
    Then it says:
    System BIOS Shadowed
    Video BIOS Shadowed
This stays for about one minute (every time)

Then it lists my two harddrives or something.
My DVD rom seems to be dead (no noise on boot). None of my OS can find it, and if I recall correctly, BIOS is supposed to list this along with the hard drives?
Anyways, after listing my hard drives, my OS boots up. In my case I have dual boot so I get to chose Win7/Ubuntu. (This is the part where it gets really annoying, cause I have to wait by my computer in order to pick OS when it's booting up.) Both OS boots up normally without any problem.
Is it possible to disconnect the optical drive, but still have it in the notebook, so I don't get a big hole in it? Need that guided.

My BIOS is Godzilla BIOS 94.28, and I belive this is the latest.
My laptop is a Gateway P-6860FX.

After the video bios it intializes the drives, if the cdrom is dead it is attempting the initialization and hanging your system............

Time for a new CDROM, or at least a good cleaning. If the lens is dirty etc this could be the issue. If the CDROM is dead or dying then another one is in order.............

On my dying e6807 I just unplugged the DVD, deleted drivers and used my existing LG external 18x burner.

The slim drive was $100 at the time for that old laptop which had other issues as well.

Not sure what the slim drives run for the FX but there are drive bay options as well depending on the bucks.

So, depending on your needs and finances, this may be an option, YMMV.

    NM..at $34 it's not an issue.. http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=BLK-AD-7563A-DO&cpc=RESX
