    Hey guys,

I just installed Windows XP (dual-boot with Windows Vista) and I cannot adjust the brightness of the screen via the FN keys. Before installing the latest video card drivers from Intel, it was at the highest setting (not able to adjust). After installing the drivers, it brought the setting back to the lowest one and it is hard to see the desktop (still can't adjust). Is there any other way of adjusting the screen (tried via Intel's software for the video card drivers and it does not do the job)... unless there are generic drivers from another Gateway laptop that I can install into Windows XP??? Motherboard drivers...???

    Plz let me know ASAP!!!

    thanx!
    Carlo

This is one reason I returned my T series laptop months ago. Gateway does NOT offer XP drivers for the proprietary hardware in the laptops they sell, for example the brightness control. There are no XP drivers in existence. I have looked all over. No, the intel graphics driver has nothing to do with control of the screen lamp.

On a brighter note, I DID manage to change brightness but the best I could do was either full brightness or lowest brightness.

All you have to do is make a profile in the intel graphics driver. Then save it. Once saved you select that profile and you get full brightness. You have to select this profile each time the laptop boots unless you can make a simple script that will change it on every boot but I never bothered as I returned mine.

The thing is, using the Intel Graphics controls to change the brightness, it isn't really changing the lamp in the screen itself, it's the actual image and it doesn't look good and it is not clear at all...

in regards to johnkiss's question, no one has answered my post to tell me how they got their screen brightness to work correctly!!!!

ANYONE CAN HELP ME... i am sure i am not the only one with this problem on the Gateway T-6816!!!

You have no idea what you are talking about. We are talking about the T-68xx series of laptops. These units do not have lamp control under XP as no driver exsists.

I dont think you understand. You will NEVER get lamp brightness control on the T-6816 if you use XP. Like I said there is NO driver in exsistence.

The only way to change the lamp from lowest power to full power is , like I said, in the Intl Graphics driver. You do NOT change the brighness of the picture (which is what you are doing) You create a power management profile which will set the LAMP to full brightness. If you can not figure out how to do this then Im sorry, you are on your own. This is the only way to change the LCD LAMP to full power.

You wont prove anyone wrong. The driver does not exsist. We even contacted Gateway about this but as you may or may not know Gateway does not make or design laptops so they were no help. The Fn interface was design for Vista only. The lamp control will never work in XP unless someone goes out of their way and programs one which is not going to happen.

well, i hadn't planed on using a gateway driver nor the same model driver they recommend either..... the system wasn't designed for xp, so we are *trying to modify it* :) usually they're are a few different drivers that will actually work, it's just finding which ones will.

Trying at all is better than not trying. Besides, Planetside + Vista = suck, I needs the XP.

"Trying at all is better than not trying. Besides, Planetside + Vista = suck, I needs the XP."

Vista is not bad at all especially if you have a capable computer. If the graphics card is decent such as the 8800m gts then it will have no problem with vista, it's just that one needs to get used to the interface.

this is true.. vista is fine in my book. and you can make it look and feel like xp by turning off the vista "flare & glare" stuff

Right, so really unless you are an extreme hardcore gamer and really require xp to live then get a laptop made for it but otherwise vista should suffice=]

Wrong, Planetside under compatibility mode runs in Planetside at 20% of normal performance, as it is a DX8 game. Certain applications I need, Vista will not run; why would I stop playing something I like and still like because a non-essential piece of software requires me to?

Mainly older games; I'd be fine with dropping some driver support, and application support if I could get Planetside to run correctly, or get brightness to work in XP.

Wait, nevermind, I just realized something, I'm getting a T-6831, this is for T-6816's running the x3100; Nvidia drivers seem to work fine at Max brightness, carry on.

Haha, yeah, I was pretty worried myself, but now I'm pretty confident about getting XP on this beast, I'm just sad that Raid won't be enabled.

This maybe a little late but I wanted to let others know that I can confirm that the new BIOS update works. The BIOS update does apply to other models in case others are having the same brightness problems upgrading their Gateway to WIN XP. At the time of this posting the BIOS file on the main Gateway U.S. is not available.

I was able to find the file by making note of the EXE filename that I should have been able to download and did a search on Google. I found links
to the Gateway Mexico site with the BIOS update for another model but the file name was exactly for my BIOS update. I downloaded it and the readme.txt file confirmed that it was for my laptop T-6816 also.

    The BIOS file info. is:
    9539750.exe
    BIOS Flash Version 89.91.24, 05/22/2008

I hope this helps people because I was fustrated with my XP conversion and had tried on different occasions and was unsuccessful thinking it was a driver issue. As a final note there are XP drivers available even if Gateway doesn't provide all of them. You just have to know the model of your hardware and go to the OEM and get drivers from them.
