Just wondering what you guys would choose for a stock 6860fx? Though money is not super tight, I wouldn't want to spend an extra 60-70 dollars on the T9300 if its only going to give me 2-3 FPS gain...
Main priority would be CAD and gaming...Thanks guys.
-
Most modern games are far more GPU-intensive than CPU-intensive, so I doubt you'll see any difference in FPS. I have no idea about CAD, though.
-
2-3 fps for most games is about right
-
That's pretty weak considering the price difference...I guess I'll go with the t8300 and be smart...
-
Well there are many things that the extra cache and extra CPU speed would be beneficial... unfortunately gaming probably isn't one that you will see a huge jump from.
If you were encoding movies, working with huge files in Photoshop, etc.... then it would probably be beneficial for you. Gaming, probably not. -
It's not enough of a performance difference to justify the extra expense. I went through the same dilemma as you a few months back (regarding my P-6831FX).
I came across a T8300 (brand new & in the retail box) on ebay for $212.00 total which included shipping and am quite satisfied with the deal.
If you want bragging rights, then go with the T9300.Otherwise, the T8300 should serve your needs quite well. I certainly have no complaints.

I have been going to these forums for many months now, every day (especially at the work place
) and never realized that ryo1000 and jester1x are running T8300's. Again without a search function at the moment on this forum you guys (or others) may have posted benchmarks and general playability comments with these chips. If not would you mind doing so?
-
I actually don't have my P-6831FX with me at the moment. I leave it at my Mom's house for weekend visits. It's fun to play Mass Effect on my desktop, then transfer those same saves to my laptop and continue on. I've played Assassin's Creed using this method and am almost finished with Devil May Cry 4.
I've only been playing Mass Effect for the past three weeks or so. I take a rather long time to finish a game (compared to others) and thoroughly enjoy it. I play for maybe a 45 minutes to an hour or so most nights. Work and other everyday life tasks keep my from playing for six or eight hour stretches. Plus, when I get stuck on a particular stage, boss, level, etc..., I tend to end my session. Then, I come back hours or days later for another attempt. I haven't played a game for eight hours straight since Final Fantasy 6 was originally released. I had some intense Super Nintendo sessions back then and none of the responsibilities I have now. Oops, I better learn to stay on topic...!
I'll run some 3DMark06 benchmarks this weekend. I can't remember if I ran it when I first installed the T8300. -

T8300 vs T9300
-
Woohoo I use Photoshop... 3% increase!
-
Well I have a "old" 6831-FX and upgraded it with a T9300 and get between 8700-8800 scores in 3DMark 06 scores at 1200x800.Not that it translates into FPS in games but it runs very smooth with it.
-
You still should be getting at least a few more FPS in games with the T9300. I know at stock (2.6ghz) my FPS' went up like 5-6FPS in Crysis. If you mean it doesnt make a huge difference, you are correct.
-
I don't know if I should even go here..but I ordered and got my t8300 already..My 6860fx should be here on Monday, I got it new for 850 shipped...I am going to pop the t8300 in there, but is it possible to OC the thing to get around the same performance as the t9300?
Thanks guys! -
Congrats on the 6860, youll be very happy with it. Unfortunately, no, you cannot OC the t8300 at this time. Nobody knows what the PLL is and there's no option to OC in the BIOS unless you have an Extreme Edition CPU.
-
^^ agreed, you cannot unlock a T series processor, been doing research for weeks and all lead to that final conclusion.. get urself a X7800 or X7900.. its a little more cash but it is well worth it
btw, t8300 for my money.. T9300 sure does have a much higher cache and a lil more power but it just ain't worth the extra $80 considering it doesn't make much of a difference game wise.. have a friend of mine who went and bought a T9300 to upgrade from the T8300 and spent a extra 100 doing so, but now he wishes he didn't cause mass effect still moves at the same speed for him!! -
yup, 5-6 frames is even a stretch...more like 2-3 on the majority of games since c2d processors are already so overpowered
-
Aha..thanks for saving me a LOT A LOT of headache..I would have beat myself up so much...
On another note..how hard is it to get the cpu switched out? -
The only sensible upgrade would be the P9500 if you insist on the extra cash / clocks at it shares the same TDP (until the QX9300 comes out
)
Swapping the CPU on this laptop is quite possibly as easy as it gets. Its less screws, less parts, less paste, less time, less work than any other desktop or laptop I've ever worked on -
-
Very, very simple,I know there are guides somewhere on this site.
Basically you take off the back cover 4 screws
Take off the heat sink
Take off the screws around the CPU,be careful some are spring loaded.
Take out old CPU, look out for a small arrow and remember which way it's pointed( your going to line up the arrow on the new CPU the same way)
Gently drop in the new CPU and just let it settle in.
Wipe off old thermal paste off heat sink.(You first need to buy some AS5 thermal paste- you can get it at Radio Shack)
Put about a rice size bead of thermal paste on the CPU and spread all over the top of the CPU that contacts the heatsink (Don't go over board on the thermal paste just make sure you cover the hole CPU)
Screw in bolts around the CPU.
Put in heat sink and screw back in.
Screw in back cover and your done.
Fire it up and start gaming.
On a side note when you take off the screws around the CPU they are numbered 1-4 take them off in order and put it together in the same order. -
What's the biggest, baddest, fastest CPU anyone has gotten into the 6860???
Has any problems come from it??? Is cooling been any kind of problem???
Also, what memory upgrades have anyone performed on the 6860? According to the Vista Hardware Rating System, the 4GB is the weak link... -
-
2. only joy, the x7800/7900 are probably the hottest chip you can put in it, but by undervolting and keeping it @2.8ghz heat is not an issue. i do use a zalman nc-1000.
3. its not the amount of the RAM its the speed it is running, and there is no way around that as it is limited by the chipset. however once you switch the cpu you will see a significant increase in the vista memory marks.
btw the vista performance thing is a very poor yardstick at best. -
Don't worry about spreading the AS5 over the cpu. The pressure from the heatsink as well as the heat of the cpu will spread it out evenly.
-
I just ordered a T9300 this morning and am eagerly waiting for it to come in. Darn thing just won't come fast enough. Still says charged instead of shipped. Dang.
Too bad overnight doesn't start immediately when you order it. -
-
My next plans are for the sceen and put in a blu-ray drive. You might ask why I didn't just get one that had all that stuff but I wanted to do it all myself because I like working with hardware and taking things apart.
-
My best friend has got an m-series(forget which one) that has the T5450 and I'm giving him my T5550. Not much of an upgrade but every bit counts. Tonight we took both of them apart and took the T5550 out of mine and put it in his to see if there was much of an increase. There wasn't much but it was there. I just wanted an excuse to look at the internals like a perv!
-
Please share more when you get around to putting in that T9300. Mine's also being shipped to me at this moment, and as this is my first time touching a computer cpu of any kind I'll take all the good experience stories I can find.
-
The black square in the center is not heatsink glue. Don't attempt to sand it off.
-
lol i almost forgot about that ^
-
Must...resist...temptation...
-
I installed my t8300 the other night...and oh my my my...What a difference...Everything is SO much more responsive and it FLIES....I could not be happier! It was such an easy install as well...took me 4 minutes and it was done...But what a difference!!!!!!
-
I'm still waiting on newegg!!!!! argh!!! I was looked again this morning and only the AS5 has shipped!! What in the world? The thermal shipped before the processor? I did rush processing and that's the best they can do it rush the thermal? Granted the processor isn't that good to use without the stuff I still think the rush processing should have been done for either (a) my entire order or (b) the most expensive part. I want the processor to come in sooooooooooo bad. I'm very impatient
-
And as to the black chip in the middle I saw that last night when I was peeping at the internals and I was like......oooooohhhhhh shiney! jk
-
thats weird..maybe it is not in stock? Thats the only thing I could think of...My as5 and my cpu shipped at the same time...different boxes....but same time...sorry to hear that!
-
WOOT!!! Shows the status is shipped. And I got overnight shipping too, so it should be here tomorrow!!!! Can't wait!! Working double shift today and then working tomorrow + school too so I might not have the energy to put it in....then again.....I'll see the box and it'll be a burst of energy. lol

Sad thing was it was the next day.....

Good point...

I got it in!!!!! T9300 laying on my bed when I got home. And just said it was going to ship today. Installed it in less than 5 minutes(including boot up and reboot). It was def. worth every penny for me. I love it. ha ha ha. I feel like a darn little kid who just got ice cream or something.

I love it when things (preferably wimmenz) are laying on my bed when I get home. Doesn't happen that often tho.
