Hey guys, I have a very unusual issue with my laptop. I've had it since '09 and ever since mid '11 did it encounter the super high temperature issue.

Here's what I checked and did:
    clean reinstall of OS
newest nvidia driver which is 310.90 i think with default settings for GPU
bios is still the old 9c.05.00
idle at 120+ degrees F for the GPU
    CPU/disk idles around 98+ degrees F
gateway logo and windows logo screens load up pretty fast ~2 seconds
    cleaned out dust inside laptop

heres an example of what the high temps have hindered for my gaming experience:
Games like Left 4 Dead which would have averaged 56+ fps on med-high before 2011, but now it just stutters n drops fps to ~5 on lowest settings after 3-6 minutes in game.

    Any suggestions to resolve this?

edit: if this helps, when I game the GPU temp shoots up to 160+ F and CPU/disk goes up to 129+ F

I see no mention here about you repasting your CPU and GPU.
If you didn't, do so, and use some high quality grease (PK-1).
If you did, maybe your heatpipes are defective.

Oh sorry, yes I did repaste with antec diamond series. i dont think they'd go 'defective' after year+ though, I'm hoping this would be a software-sided problem

Sure sounds like your TIM has given up or you have a dead fan.

I hear the fans roaring when I turn the comp on. Could you explain to me what the TIM is about?

TIM is the Thermal Interface Material or more commonly the heat paste of the CPU and/or GPU to the repective heat sinks. Since this from 09 it is an old install of the TIM and is probably a bit deteriorated. I am not sure how much you also clean the fan and vents so it is a good idea to do that as well. These systems for optimal performance should get a cgood cleaning at least once a month.

Now if your temps were Degrees in 'c' I would worry but as in degrees 'f' you actually seem pretty well off. My question would be what, under load, are the TSZx temps? These can cause a problem with declocking the CPU without the temps getting that high and the P7811 edition is known to have this issue. if the CPU declocks this can have a sever effect on FPS.

Edit; Also do you overclock the video memory? it is well know with nvidia card if the video memory fails from too high an oc it will try andd asve itslf from going to a really strange clock that severly effects FPS...............

Did anyone else notice that the CPU and GPU fans would not ramp up after returning from hibernation or sleep (forget which or both)?

I've had both disabled for over a year since laptop is on 24/7 but I remember disabling both because of fan issue. Never did investigate cause.

Thanks for info on the TIM, where would that be located? Can you care to explain what the TSZx temps are? I'm bad with comp lingo. I haven't overclocked video memory, everything is on default and automatic settings if that could help my situation. I'm considering replacing the heatsink and/or fan since they sell the spare parts on ebay.

The TIM is the paste used between the heat sink and chip. The TSzx temps are the NorthBridge temps as will show in hardware monitor. TBH if you are not that usre of computer lingo how sure are you of doing a TEAR down. This is not something to do for a first timer, there is however a wonderful thread here just for that.........................

I'm very familiar with desktop computers, so I apologize for my lack of knowledge in laptops. To be honest, I think I had a brain shock over the laptop issue. I've opened my laptop yesterday, replaced the stock TIM and the temps for the graphics are near a brand new computer temp. Currently idle at 90+ F with cpu temps at 60+ F idle with an old driver. I tested using the 310.90 driver and an old one 179.48 i believe. The 310.90 still averages 110+ F for the GPU so i'll stick with the old one. Since you're here and being very competent with me, do you think it's a good idea to replace the stock fan and heatsink just to see if I could get better or more stable temperatures? When I play a game, the temperature still shoots back up to 140+ F and then idles at 120+ after the game is closed.

Please us celcius when talking about temps here, it helps us to relate. FYI: Driver versions have little relation to temps so use the one you like. Your gaming temps are confusing ie 60c while gaming (low) and 49 @ idle (normal). How did you repaste GPU? It requires a complete teardown. Did you just remove your memory/cpu cover? If so what did you use on the North Bridge IC adjacent to the CPU. Are you running your laptop in a freezer? CPU temp of 16c is pretty much unheard of.

What bios version are you using?

    Apologize for what ????

Any of those temps in F are nothing to worry about...............
