When I was browsing the retail products on Gateway's site a couple of weeks ago, I could have sworn I saw an Intel-based Platinum Edition notebook with Core Duo and a Radeon X1400 GPU. Now there is hardly any mention of it and a Google search only turned up a handful of references. What became of this notebook? Did Gateway decide not to offer it at the last minute, or what? Maybe Uscooper could shed some light on this?

i actually saw this online and it was sold out, hasnt made it to stores... and i checked online other day and it was gone. No clue.....
-
I saw this at BestBuy online. It got my hopes way up, and then was not listed anymore. Hopefully it will come back soon.

Metamorphical Good computer user
Actually, when I picked up my Ipod from Bestbuy the other day. You know the little area where you take stuff to get it serviced right? There was a Gateway machine sitting on back corner behind the counter at my local bestbuy. It had the "Centrino duo" sticker, and an ATI sticker on it. I assumed they had either sold it, or it was being prepped as a Display model. =/

When I get home from vacation, I'll go to my Bestbuy on Tuesday and see if I can find the one I saw. Maybe I can ask around and get some anwsers from the so called Geek squad. o.o
-
I've been waiting for the Platinum Centrino to come out. The model is MX6750Centrino® Duo Intel® Core. The model is nearly identical to the Turion model in terms of appearence. The Centrino model has an ATI Mobilitiy RADEON X1400 graphics with 256MB HyperMemory as opposed to the ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M chipset with up to 64MB shared video memory that is found on the Turion. Also, the Centrino model has a 100GB (5400rpm) hard drive and 1GB DD2 memory. Unfortunately, it comes with Windows XP Media Center standard.
As for availability: I first saw the Platinum Centrino on Best Buy's website in late January. It was listed as $1499 but sold out. It was only on the site for a few days and it was never in stock or at stores. After a few days it was taken off the site. Another website had the notebook as being released 2/28/06. I went to a Best Buy store yesterday and asked about it. I was told that it is a brand new notebook and has not been sent to the store yet. The employee told me to check back in a week or two because the inventory system said it should be coming to the store. As of now, the computer is not listed on the Best Buy website but the specs and manual are available at Gateway.com.
Hopefully the Platinum Centrino will finally be released over the next week or two. -
They did know about the notebook though? I asked at two different BestBuys, neither had an idea of what I was talking about.
Metamorphical, did you check with your Geek Squad yet? -
Update on the situation:
Maybe some of you have already noticed this, but to those who haven't, I discovered something (very simple) that may be the sign of a comeback of 'The Other Platinum Edition' to retail.
Gateway MX6750
Gateway MX6708
Listed are two Gateway notebooks featuring the Core Duo scheduled for release February 28. Neither are Platinum Edition, but who knows how the P-Editions are distributed?
Anyways, this has given me hope that one (or both) of these beasts will return to BestBuy. Hopefully no one will find a flaw in my findings, for it would be devastating to me -
-
Yes, but the X1400 is raising the bar on the X600. Plenty good enough for me
-
Whoops, now it says March 1st
-
According to BestBuy's computer database and Gateway http://support.gateway.com/support/manlib/Notebooks/platinum/platinum.shtml the MX6750 is the other platinum edition.
-
Well, I guess I was wrong
March 2nd and it is not yet listed.. -
It does exist. It is sitting on my desk beside me. Trying to see if I can be a laptop person. I am a gamer MMO
It plays fairly well. I only got it with 1gig of ram will take it back and get it update to 2 gig. The graphic is resonable good. Does not compare to my dell but that is no really surprise as it does not have a 24' display. I bought it a week ago at Future shop (taken over by Best Buy last year)

Just a question about the gateway mx6708 does it have 128 mb dedicated video memory or 128 shared hyper memory it just says 128 mb on the site
-
It believe it has 64MB of dedicated memory and 64MB of Hypermemory (shared) for a total of 128MB. The version in the 6750 has 128MB dedicated/128MB Hypermemory (shared). Confusing, I know. This question must get asked about ATI graphics cards at least once a day.

I am now a proud owner of the MX6750. I bough mine at FSHOP for a ridiculous price. This laptop is a beast! Meanwhile I work on completing the review, you might wanna see some pics here: http://pcfred.teddypokerdeals.com/gallery/index.php?album=gateway-mx6750h

PS I am trying to find a cool name for this machine. What do you guys think of : ''The double-brainded Black Panthere''.
--- --- --- --- -
Very nice pictures! It's a sharp machine
Heh, nice name. Maybe a bit "cleaner" though. I don't give my computers names, so I am inexperienced, but if I were to give your computer a name, I would say. . . oh I am clueless. Almost forgot I suck when it comes to names (look at my username!)
Cappuccino -- as whenever I get a feel for the Platinum Edition, I always relate it's color to coffee.. Not a bad thing! I dig it a lot -
Thanks Hellmans! I'll think about it for the name too. The only thing that this machine is not doing, it's coffee!
-
Hey, nice photos btw. I just went through them. Every time I see it, it gets sleeker and more attractive.
Thanks for the photos. Looking forward to your review
The "other" Platinum Edition?
