I know there's a previous thread about this model but it doesnt really address my true concerns. Im just thinking maybe the price for what you get is too good to be true. Im not familiar with ATI gpus so can anyone clarify whether or not this machine and its components can satisfy a semi-hardcore gamer?(I have the money to buy a more expensive gaming laptop but if this deal is truly worthwhile id like to save the extra cash)

Once you upgrade the proc, it should kick some butt.
It's no 6860FX, but then again, I can't use a lappie with a 17" monitor, either.
The specs on the HD 2600 look pretty decent, about between an 8600M GT DDR2 and an 8600M GT with DDR3. If you take overclocking into account, you can get near HD 2600 XT, from what others have discovered.
I WANTED to get the $799 Costco version (M-6851, $899 at newegg) but fell asleep at the wheel - apparently they sold out sometime in the past few hours.

The 6850fx, in its stock form, will play pretty much anything you want to play at native resolution on medium to high settings with the exception of Crysis, which will play fluently at 1280x800 at low to medium settings.
I had the 6850fx for a couple of days until I decided to exchange it for at 6850fx when it went on sale. I gave it a pretty good workout while i had it. -

Just go with the Asus, sounds like spending more on an equal product will help you sleep better at night.
LOL. I just don't get it, there are HUNDREDS of positive posts and reviews concerning the Gateway FX line, yet people still insist on trying to find a dark lining in a silver cloud. -

I had a nice novel typed up in response to this, but have since decided to just smile, nod and move along. However I would like to point out that when I said "equal product", I was speaking in general and was not comparing any particular product individually, as you never stated exactly WHICH Asus you were looking at.
You seem kinda upset and I never meant to cause a ruckus. To be frank, it makes no difference to me what laptop you buy as for one its not my money and two, I don't play the brand fanboy game. I was simply trying, like the others who chimed in, to answer your question and give you an honest answer. It just seemed a bit strange to try to pick apart things such as battery temperature and latches(which the 6850 has a strong enough hinge that a latch is not needed). I guess my comment was a bit catty and for that I apologize. Good luck in your search. -
I wouldn't worry too much about the latch-less design - it seems many manufacturers are going that route - my wife's 6-month old HP/Compaq C712NR is like that, and she's had absolutely no issues. That unit gets bounced around the house constantly, from our bedroom, to the living room, to the kids taking it into their bedrooms, and back and forth.
Considering the changes Gateway is commencing, if the 6850FX is in your price grasp, I would snag it - I missed out on the costco M-6851 (similar unit) by lollygagging around, and pondering too much.
Also, keep in mind, alot of these things are OEM'd overseas, and the manufacturers that WE deal with are not the REAL manufacturers, per se.
just food for thought - if ya find a deal that sounds good on the FX - take it.
It seems to be a reasonable enough machine.

(i brought it up in my earlier response). Anyways, no need to apologize it was just a misunderstanding.
The M-6850 FX?
