I know there's a previous thread about this model but it doesnt really address my true concerns. Im just thinking maybe the price for what you get is too good to be true. Im not familiar with ATI gpus so can anyone clarify whether or not this machine and its components can satisfy a semi-hardcore gamer?(I have the money to buy a more expensive gaming laptop but if this deal is truly worthwhile id like to save the extra cash)

Once you upgrade the proc, it should kick some butt.
    It's no 6860FX, but then again, I can't use a lappie with a 17" monitor, either.

The specs on the HD 2600 look pretty decent, about between an 8600M GT DDR2 and an 8600M GT with DDR3. If you take overclocking into account, you can get near HD 2600 XT, from what others have discovered.

I WANTED to get the $799 Costco version (M-6851, $899 at newegg) but fell asleep at the wheel - apparently they sold out sometime in the past few hours.

The 6850fx, in its stock form, will play pretty much anything you want to play at native resolution on medium to high settings with the exception of Crysis, which will play fluently at 1280x800 at low to medium settings.

I had the 6850fx for a couple of days until I decided to exchange it for at 6850fx when it went on sale. I gave it a pretty good workout while i had it.

THanks for the quick response. I know im being nit picky(dont know how to spell that) but ive been reading some reviews on it and ive been hearing that the battery pack and cpu run pretty hot and also that there is no latch to keep the laptop shut. Again, it may be nothing but im just afraid it will be one of those times where you buy something a lot cheaper than it's supposed to be and it ends up being total crap, u know? The other laptop i have my eye on is the new asus g50 so im really debating on whether i should take a chance with the gateway or just or just spend the extra few hundred for the asus.

Just go with the Asus, sounds like spending more on an equal product will help you sleep better at night.

LOL. I just don't get it, there are HUNDREDS of positive posts and reviews concerning the Gateway FX line, yet people still insist on trying to find a dark lining in a silver cloud.

Equal product? Have u looked at the specs of both comps? One costs more than the other for a reason. Both are listed at great prices for what you get, Im just trying to decide which one is the better deal. And as far as the other posts about the fx line go, most of them praise the 6860 and mention little to nothing about the 6850. And of the ones that do, they r mostly from ppl who JUST bought one and think they've struck gold. Im looking for information from someone who has toyed with one for some time and can give a clear cut evaluation of it. Call it what you want but i dont drop a penny on anything i am unsure about no matter what the price, let alone a comp that will be essential for day to day life as well as entertainment purposes(College student/gamer).

I had a nice novel typed up in response to this, but have since decided to just smile, nod and move along. However I would like to point out that when I said "equal product", I was speaking in general and was not comparing any particular product individually, as you never stated exactly WHICH Asus you were looking at.

You seem kinda upset and I never meant to cause a ruckus. To be frank, it makes no difference to me what laptop you buy as for one its not my money and two, I don't play the brand fanboy game. I was simply trying, like the others who chimed in, to answer your question and give you an honest answer. It just seemed a bit strange to try to pick apart things such as battery temperature and latches(which the 6850 has a strong enough hinge that a latch is not needed). I guess my comment was a bit catty and for that I apologize. Good luck in your search. :)

I wouldn't worry too much about the latch-less design - it seems many manufacturers are going that route - my wife's 6-month old HP/Compaq C712NR is like that, and she's had absolutely no issues. That unit gets bounced around the house constantly, from our bedroom, to the living room, to the kids taking it into their bedrooms, and back and forth.

Considering the changes Gateway is commencing, if the 6850FX is in your price grasp, I would snag it - I missed out on the costco M-6851 (similar unit) by lollygagging around, and pondering too much.

Also, keep in mind, alot of these things are OEM'd overseas, and the manufacturers that WE deal with are not the REAL manufacturers, per se.

just food for thought - if ya find a deal that sounds good on the FX - take it.
It seems to be a reasonable enough machine.

Im not upset i just wanted to make sure u understood where i was coming from. Like i said b4, i tend to over examine products b4 i buy them bcuz i guess im sort of paranoid that way. No worries tho, i understand what you were trying to say and i appreciate your input. But i must say that sometimes(not all the time) little things do matter. For instance, the fact that hinges tend to weaken over time, especially when unsecured. Im not saying thats the case with this laptop at all, but merely mentioned it to be sure no one happened run into that problem. BTW the asus i was referring to is the new G50.
(i brought it up in my earlier response). Anyways, no need to apologize it was just a misunderstanding.
