This one works great. Just make sure you get the 17" and not the 15.4". They have two of them and they both look identical, but the 17" has an extra zipper in the front middle, which isn't shown on the product page.

This one works just fine as well.

Yes, I own both and bought them when they were on sale lolThe first one was on sale for $49.99, but Best Buy screwed me over and sold it to me for $64.99, but I was annoyed and said screw it and paid the extra $15. The second bag I got for $29.99

I've also got the Targus 17" City Gear backpack for my 7805u and I like it a lot. It fits a ton of stuff. I even used it to take my 7805 and my 14" work laptop on a business trip to Chicago. It worked out great!

Is it possible to upgrade the cpu to a core 2 quad?
Thanks in advance,
Cheers -
I don't believe we are 100% sure, yet, Blackgillan.
However, a Quad version, the Gateway FX P-7808U, is h e r e. -
does this laptop really has a 7200 rpm hard disk or a 5400 rpm one? or gateway has silently changed the hard disk spec without changing the model naming p-7801u?
because both CNET and Tigerdirect is showing the hard disk as a 5400 rpm one in the laptop's specification. Please correct me because I want to buy it fast.
A 7200 rpm hard disk will be a good choice. -
got mine's 2wks ago with the 7200 rpm hard drive from CompUSA aka TigerDirect.
-
thanks zerolaptophero for the quick reply, btw doesn't it looks like a grave mistake for a large vendor like tigerdirect??? They should correct the error ASAP.
-
Yes, it is a 7200 rpm drive - Gateway's site also shows that it is, h e r e.

some advises for Gateway to make the FX series a real success and to put the FX p-7800 series on Laptop Hall of Fame: (i dont know if Gateway will ever hear or read my this advices):
Add a speedy processor like Core 2 Quad or Duo 9000 series, better go for Mobile core i7 when it will be released
Good performing motherboard with tons of BIOS tuning and tweaking options
support for 6-8 GB DDR3 RAM, running atleast 1333 MHz, better offer high performance professional memory module like hyperx, ballistix, XMS, etc
equipped with dual harddisk at 7200 rpm and capacity upto 1 TB or SSD if price goes down
add bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, intel 5300agn
a better display, I prefer frameless like dell studio xps or lenovo ideapad, also a decent quality like dell's one
graphics option upto crossfire/sli with ati mobility radeon 4870 2GB/ nvidia geforcego 280 GTX 2 GB, and ofcourse with GDDR5 memory
Displayport, HDMI 1.3b, Blue-ray option, improved built-in speakers with a subwoofer addition, plus a good performing integrated sound card with 7.1 digital out support (I like the Analog Devices audio codec of Asus's motherboard, but realtek are just fine)
Fingerprint/facial recognition (i dont know why it is not available but was in 173XL which is same as any p-7800 series), a better trackpad and most interestingly a backlit keyboard
If gateway ever be able to do these features available, it is guaranteed that they can bring a heavy competition in the gaming laptop market, like what shuttle did some years back with there invention of SFF pc. Shuttle was a very infamous manufacturer, but they created a history.
Best of Luck Gateway(2000) Team. -
2.) Memory may be supportable, at least by bios update, to 8 gigs. 1333 DDR3 may be a chipset limitation.
3.) 1TB is possible now! To offer it as standard is again more money.
4.) Better display, again maybe more money but I like m AUO1088.
5.) Networking on the newer quad core supposedly has bluetooth.
6.) Display port, HDMI 1.3b etc etc etc is more money and/or updated hardware.
7.) Finger print, facial, touchpad are more money and possible bloatware. Personally I would have shelled for it.
8.) I whole heartedly agree with a sub here, would have made a world of difference. -
the problem is: intel faces no competition in the mobile sector, so they are asking very high price for the mobile processor and chipsets combo. If AMD can bring some semi to hard category competition, we can have a quad core Gateway/alienware/asus gaming pc under $1300. Intel is going to bring some killing fight at the graphics market with their upcoming Larrabee GPU. and then we will see some heavy price drop at the GPU sector, btw already we are seeing the result... AMD's top end 4800 is so cheap that, we can buy some enthusiast GPU under $250 (some 1 or 2 years back it was not possible)
So we can have our dream laptop only when there is some heavy competition. -
Question about the wifi mini-pci....
Can I replace the Intel wifi card inside this unit with an Atheos or a Broadcom? I am concerned about the size differences if there are any, and also if the BIOS would or would not support it.
If anyone has any info on this I would very much appreciate it, I have searched for hours on this to no resolution.
Thanks....
Mac Wynn
