Okay, I have Vista Home premium 64 bit that came with unit. See below.
I want to upgrade to Ultimate 64 bit. So looking at the "upgrade anytime" it would be $159 vs. $319 everywhere else. Problem is the "upgrade anytime" literature says that Ultimate 32 bit is the only option. ? How can this be?

So what would you (those geniuses that have already done this) do?

Upgrade through the "upgrade anytime" feature anyway? $159
    OR
Buy new version of Vista Ultimate 64 bit? $319
    OR
Scrap it all and go Windows 7? Free at this point.

Will I have to do clean installs with numbers 2 and 3 or can I just install overtop and not have to reload all other software?

    Thanks in advance.

What benefit do you see to yourself if you decide to 'upgrade' to Vista Ultimate?

    yep. why?

i got an ultimate licence for cheap, so i thought "why not?". but else, why, is a great question in your case.

i know one thing that ultimate has that home premium doesn't, and would be nice for my tablet pc.

still, want to see your points on what you gain :)

To be honest, In my own opinion, I used both and Vista home premium 64 bit runs better that Ultimate 64 bit. Just my experience thats all..

Well this is just what I needed to hear.

Attached is the comparisons of Vista HP (green)and Ultimate(Black) and I'm just showing part of the chart showing the differences.

Aside from the differences is there no marginal increase in operating performance as I have read in some threads?

Data failure and data loss are the 2 biggies here and that was primarily why I was going to upgrade as well as some talk of increased performance.

If this is clearly not the case then perhaps I won't upgrade and stay where I am at. I going to keep on open mind on this and monitor the feedback and make a more informed decision a little later.

    Thanks again people. :)

I agree with this. I have used both, Ultimate and HomePremium (both x64) and must say that HomePremium gives me best performance. Ultimate has many services you don't need at all day use. This slows down your computer. Also, this is not a good time to buy an os, use Windows7 for one year and buy Windows 7 when it comes out.
    Cheers.

That's just inbuilt options. You can always add most of that functionality on your own through third party programs that are usually better anyway.

Personally, I run Vista Ultimate, because I got it for free.
I'm considering buying Vista Business though because I'd rather have it than Ultimate! I'll definitely be running Windows 7 Business when it comes out, not Ultimate.

    +1

...and please back up your files, even if you don't have to do a clean install.

Yes, I have disabled many services I don't need at both Ultimate and HP. HP runs better anyway :D
But I burn Win7 to iso now to test it out... :)

save your money. just get the windows 7 RC 1

and dual boot it with vista if you really feel the need to play with an "ultimate" version of windows.
