Ok, I have been looking around for an answer to whether or not the 7811FX CAN output 5.1 through a (supposed) S/PDIF connection in the microphone jack. Some people have said yes. Others have said no. Some say it shows up on the Windows mixer, so it exists. Others say that Gateway made a typo booboo and it doesn't exist.

Does ANYONE know the correct answer?

I dont think so dude, you only have a REAL 5.1 output with a sound card 5.1 with the jack connections, but you could get 5.1 through the HDMI output in a Hometheater, but its not a real 5.1 this will be a simulated 5.1 like Dolby pro logic II that distribute the same sound over de 5 speakers.

Or wouldn't it pass through the digital signal if the dvd player supported it? Isn't that what a fiber optic audio cable does also? So technically depending on what codec the laptop is sending is what kind of sound you would produce. I think on dvds that can send through the codec straight to your home theater system you would be good. I'm not sure about games though.

I play 5.1 through logitech 5.1 speakers on my gateway m-6752. I have a headphone to RCA converter followed by an RCA to 5.1 converter that came with my logitech 5.1 speakers.
