    All,
As I am sure you have read, there are lots of concerns with the roomers of failing nvidia chips at high rates. Read this article: http://gizmodo.com/5037070/proof-nvidia-desktop-g86-graphics-cards-affected-by-materials-defects

a responce from nvidia is as follows:
    <<<
    1) The issue is limited to a few notebook chips only; we have not seen and don't expect to see this issue on any NVIDIA based desktops

    2) Only a very small percentage of the notebook chips that have shipped are potentially affected and the problem depends on a combination of environmental conditions, configuration and usage model

    3) We continue to work closely with our partners and have taken the necessary steps to ensure that all NVIDIA chips currently in production do not exhibit the problem

    >>>

This is the original article: http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/08/12/nvidia-g92s-g94-reportedly

It supposidly effects 8800GT, 8800GTS, 8800GS, several mobile flavours of 8800, most of the 9800 suffixes, and a few 9600 variants. Thats about everyone.

Dell put out a fix that kicks the fans on sooner, this only mitigates the problem... but regardless... my 6860 has been working well. Any other comments from you all??

    Rick

My advice when anyone asks me is not to buy a laptop with an nVidia chip in it. Just too much risk. The details are trickling out and nVidia hasn't shown a willingness to really deal with this problem.

Why would both HP and Dell extend their warranties a full year without charging cutomers, thus substantially increasing their costs, unless this was truly a major problem?

Note that the new Studios are shipping with ATI dedicated graphics, I suspect that trend will continue and accelerate.

I just want to see some actual proof other then sources that all point back to the friggin Inquirer . As for HP/Dell extending there warranty's thats a good thing however you look at it and wouldnt sway me away from a machine because of it. infact it may actually make me want it more knowing i have an extra year for free if something go's wrong.

So makes sense to cool as well as possible and be sure to run a mobile driver so clocks drop back. It doesn't seem to be the high heat however but the number of heating/cooling cycles breaking down the packaging.

I have convinced myself it is limited to GO76-86 mostly.

Don't even tell me there is no Santa Clause.

well i wouldn't buy any g84 g86 equipped lapies even if dell gives me 3 year warranty, those m1530, m1330 are the real cause for global warming.

I just read the articles. Wow! Bad journalism. All fluff. No substance. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. This is the age of media drama - attract readers/viewers by presenting a news "show". If you are going to accuse a company of deceiving its customers/partners intently, knowingly over a extended period of time, you should back up your article with some solid stats.
