*Ahem*...well that thread WOULD explain why the BSODs are happening, I did have a sense that it may be the case, it tends to happen generally speaking when I'm torrenting or otherwise downloading a bunch of stuff at once.
Which I guess tells me I should either avoid heavy downloading or just tolerate the BSODs until some kind of update for the wireless drivers is released-which kind of seems like it may not be likely-considering the fact that it may be more a problem with Vista 64 than the card itself.
Oh, another question, this is something that's been bugging me with my desktop as well. On my desktop, Windows Update is on and updates automatically, with the annoying side-effect of it automatically restarting the computer overnight, causing me to lose any data I neglected to save.
Now for that reason I have automatic updates turned off on my laptop, the problem is I don't think I can receive any updates whatsoever unless they ARE automatic, plus of course there's the whole issue, similar to the UAC, that despite how annoying it is it's more-or-less essential to the computer's stability and security.
However, automatic updates and restarts are going to be even more of an issue with my laptop since I've got alarm software on it that wakes me up to get ready for work/classes-if the comp restarts overnight and I have to work/go to school the next day that's going to be a BIG problem because unless I can set it to also automatically log me back in, I won't be hearing any alarm the following morning.
Update on the hard drive screws: While the screws were the right circumference and fit fairly well in the hole, they were far too loong-which either means they're actually not the ones that came with the hard drive or that perhaps they were intended for a much wider caddy or something... -
Like I said, I am brand new to Vista, so this is the first I have heard about UAC. I had to google it. I will try installing BF2 again with UAC disabled, but I won't be home until Friday night. I'll let you know how it goes. Anyway, thanks for the reply Azianai. -

Got this laptop a week ago. It's been great but recently been getting occasional blue screens that have been saying driver power state failure. I've debugged em and it appears to be something with the O2Media sd card reader driver. I'm going to restore to factory default and see if it goes away.

is it confirmed that the bsod's are only caused by the network card?
-
so, bsod's are caused by drivers, not the actual hardware itself?
-
let's see... i've been browsing around the web and i came across a bunch of issues that p-7811fx experiences out of the box. my question is, is it possible to have it stress tested first by the geek squad before i take it home, and are they knowledgeable enough to scrutinize this piece of hardware.
i'd do it myself but i'm way over here in the philippines. -
-
@tallan
thanks a lot for the reply. yeah... bb shouldn't have a problem running the unit and scrutinizing so that it's good to go when it arrives here.. -
Does anybody know what's a good cooling system for this? I'm picking one up this weekend.
-
Lets try this again. Does anyone here that owns a P-7811FX still have the C:\ACER folder on their hard drive?
-
Yes, my laptop does. (it's a hidden folder) -
At any rate the C:\Acer folder contains all the preinstall stuff. I know because when I tried to update the sound driver it pointed to that directory. -
If it is drivers you want, why not just download them from the drivers thread here? Just asking so don't shoot.
OK you are active in both threads. I see someone bit on your request. -
So then I got curious and found the Gateway Recovery Manager which lets you backup/restore drivers and applications. When I attempted to create a backup it said the drivers didn't exist. I am guessing they were all in this folder which like a dumb a$$ I deleted.
If anyone has this folder I would like to get a copy of it to prove my theory. -
You did see where someone on the drivers thread offered to upload for you, right? -
They keep promoting the gateway line as a higher end computer from their own Acer line because of Gateway's established market in the West. In Asia, Acer's still big so they don't bother with Gateway in the asian market.

Is it possible for someone to make a list of removable pre-installed garbage that this comes with? That way I know exactly what to remove and what not to. It would save me a lot of time seeing as how I don't know what a few of these programs actually do and will need to run them all through google. Also, would you suggest removing all items from "start up"? Or are there some things that should be left ticked.
-
i remember asking a question about how if it's possible to run crysis on very high for about 4 hours to see if problems pop up.
i have 1 other qs aside from this one...
can i have the geek squad scrutinize this for me especially the backlight if there is ghosting? (+ how do i bump up the lights) and are there any charges for that? -
Hey guys first post here! Found notebook review a month or so ago when I set out to buy my first laptop, finally deciding on the p-7811 fx for obvious reasons... This laptop is great! Been reading this thread since conception and haven't seen the problem come up that I am currently experiencing. Bought it sunday and am using it with the Linksys WRT160N wireless router I bought in June when my fiance got her HP. Web browsing speeds are great and I can play WoW maxed at 60 FPS and when i check the connection it says 65 mb/s but any time I try to download something (WoW patches, iTunes, Ventrilo, anything) it comes in at a crawling 30 kb/s with full signal. I downloaded the intel wifi 5100 driver from intel's site and still nothing... Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe Vista is limiting download speed??? Thanks guys and thanks for all the previous discussion!

oh, I just wanted to mention that it looks like the 7811FX comes with two different ac adapters. the difference is just superficial as far as I can tell. the brick on the first one I got had ridges on the top and the brick on the second one when I exchanged my laptop was smooth. I haven't noticed any hissing from either one and both got hot, though I think the ridged one got hotter than the smooth one. not sure though. just FYI for folks.

I posted this in the official info thread but just to give the Q a bit more traffic:
Anyone having issues with the left GPU fan going nonstop? Mine never seems to go silent and it's driving me a little nuts. Maybe I'm remembering wrong but I'm pretty sure my 6860, which had a hotter GPU, was silent every now and then. -
-
Have you checked the intake vent? After only a couple of days mine had visible dust buildup; also check for clearance - a couple of posters have recommended putting either bottle caps or DVD cases under the rear of the 7811 to prop it up a bit... personally I like the NZXT Cryo LX cooler which not only cools but elevates and angles the notebook perfectly.

So once I got this undervolting thing figured out (it's just a matter of taking the time and getting my lazy self to go through the tutorial), I shouldn't have quite the same heating issues-although the CPU side doesn't seem to get all too incredibly hot-it's probably still a good idea since atm it's not exposed-I can only have the GPU and Hard Drive vents exposed by having them "hanging" (fairly stably, mind you) off the edge of the tray table I have the laptop on.
I'm still considering getting that NZXT maybe once I get my next paycheck, which should be a big one since they've got me working a bunch of hours this week-unfortunately due to Memorial Day (or is it Labor Day?) I'll be getting my paycheck on Friday instead of Thursday, it's kind of weird I guess they need exactly three days to process everyone's pay or something. -

the gpu is blowing air to the left (between the dvd drive and the two usb ports) the cpu blows air to the rear (right of the battery). -

The other test was Charter in the frozen North. Cost is the same. -
no, there is something wrong with your setup my wifi uses the full bandwidth of my connection which is 300kb/s
i would check the router configuration, maybe reset it... -
Hey guys, when I right click on my computer and open up the properties one of the processor shows @ 2.26 and the other is @ 2.27. Anyone else seeing this also? Why is there a difference? Just curious
-
Hmm, I reset back to factory default to try to get rid of blue screen problem with that driver for the media reader. But I still got one this time without using hibernate. Anyone else getting a driver_power_state_failure error?
-
If you're blue screening with the factory default, the problem is with the laptop. I would get a replacement.
-
Okay, my laptop has a SERIOUS problem now!
At first, I thought it was just firefox, but now it's happening no matter what program I have open is.
What happens is whatever program I have up front suddenly starts to not respond, and when I right click on the task bar to try to start the task manager, it causes the task bar to stop responding as well. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing either-basically I'm forced to do a hard restart and when I start again it does the same thing.
Is this a virus, spyware, or some kind of glitch or just what the hell is it and how can I fix the thing 'cause I want to be able to use my laptop again!
Come to think of it, how fast could I be able to set up a clean boot? I can't quite remember how to do that exactly, though... -
Was this happening out of the box or after you started installing stuff?
