I'm going to do that too, I hope that since it's only been a little over a week I can still take advantage of it-and get the free game too. (although I'm torn between Turok and Mass Effect)

I could attempt an exchange too, but I want to see what doing a clean install on the main hard drive will do.

This wouldn't effect the second hard drive would it, should I remove it before I use the restore disc or would I have to reformat it with the clean install?

Also, would the whole partitioning do nothing whatsoever because the clean install would wipe the partitioning data as well? Although I assume to some extent that it's actually part of the bios or whatever that is more or less unaffected.

DJ: You won't get the free game, at least that is what the CS reps told me at my 2 local best buys. Price matching is not an issue.

What if I ended up having to exchange the one I've got now, though?

It would in that case not merely be a matter of price-matching, but it's kind of like buying a new unit or whatever in a certain sense-plus it would be the least they could do for the inconvenience and frustration I had to go through.

No one's answered me about the reformatting or clean install or whatever the heck it would be called-I'd like to do it sometime tonight so if it still doesn't work I can return the thing tomorrow. I just need to know exactly how I should prepare the primary hard drive and possibly the secondary one as well so that I don't lose the programs I've got on the main hard drive. I'd probably copy over the personal files I don't want to lose to the second hard drive as well.

I have not done a Recovery, mind you, but believe basically with your original drive as the boot drive you simply start the Gateway Recovery Management Console program you'll find in the Start menu and follow on-screen instructions. It will put your boot drive back the way it was from the factory, DATA partition and bloatware included (caution: it will destroy all other changes or additions you've made in the process).

As for a clean install basically put in the Vista disk, boot from it, make sure you point it to the correct install drive (D: if you want to leave C: factory fresh) and install. After Vista installs you'll need to add the Gateway drivers which you can find here on the 7811 Drivers thread or by making a Drivers and Applications disk as instructed in the manual.

I'm going to try the first one-right now I'm backing up all my personal files (Documents, Videos, Music, Etc.) to my "G" drive (which I use primarily for games, hence the letter assignment). This is going to take about an hour though.

I'm hoping I'd just be able to reinstall Nero, Office, Photoshop CS3, etc after the recovery-if I have any issues with activation, I may just have to e-mail them an explanation of what happened or something...

Oh, a few more questions. Would restoring the "C" drive cause any issues with the games stored on the "G" drive-like registry things and such I do know some of the "Appdata" is on C drive. It's an invisible folder though I may have to back-up its contents differently or something.

Also, is there a way to set up the "G" drive as the default drive that things install to? It's kind of a nuisance installing all these games and having to manually adjust the file path to the secondary drive every time.

The Recovery should not change the second drive, but just to be sure you could take it out... only takes a few seconds.

As for the "install" drive Vista is going to default to doing stuff on the drive you boot from, so if you want to boot from "G:" just move it up to the top of the order in the BIOS. Unless you explicitly point to the second drive (via Path, etc.) Vista is going to ignore it. So boot drive = active drive = default drive.

Great, now it seems I can't back up anything in safe mode because the freakin' file transfer thing just stops after a certain point...maybe I should try doing this in regular mode and see if everything goes to hell again...

Trying to back-up all my files again in regular mode, hopefully it won't freeze up on me while it's doing this.

So, is the P-7811FX basically a piece of you-know-what laptop that I should return in exchange for something else like the Toshiba X-305? More than likely I'd end up losing money in that case rather than gaining money because of the sale, though. Plus it may just be I'm one of the "5%" that are having problems.

Also, it could be it was somehow connected to something I did because it worked fine for the first week, it was just the day after the end of the first week that problems kicked in...

i don't know if all the p-7811's are junk but all i know is i never had any issues with my m1730. Yeah, its little expensive but compared to what I have experience today with this.........i think it was worth it.....plus the dual 8800gtx cards just owns this :D

Yeah, but it looks like the m1730 can't be bought at Best Buy, and I went WAAAAYYYY over-budget as it is with all the extra stuff I got along with my P-7811. The odds of my parents allowing me to return this sucker and trade it in for a MORE EXPENSIVE model are slim to none.

Okay, so I can't back up anything at all 'cause apparently safe mode won't let me and normal mode freezes up partway into the process.

I may just have to return this freakin' thing to Best Buy but if it IS something on the HD, then all my files would STILL be screwed.

I've got 56 GB of video files on this freakin' thing. I wonder if I could set up a network connection and copy them over to my desktop temporarily...I'm not sure but if the laptop locks up partway through would the file transfer still be able to continue through the network? I guess I could see. First, though I'll have to figure out how to free up enough memory on my desktop to store all this stuff...

Also who knows how many BSODs I'll have to go through before I can get all the files to go through.

Someone should make a poll to know how many people have had issues and how many are happy and w/o issues. I know happy people are out there but my local bestbuy is out of prayer beads and good luck charms. I usually have terrible luck so I don't feel confident to purchase this laptop in about 12 hours as of now :(

How many times do you need to use the word "junk" in one thread? If it's such junk, simply take it back, pocket the money and enjoy your Dell. Problem solved. :)

Okay, this might be a bit enlightening perhaps but it seems when I created a new user account, all the problems with freezing up went away.

I remember on some of my old computers (although I think those were running XP) that the same thing happened, although usually it was months before some odd virus/spyware would cripple my user account in such a way that I'd have to start a new one...

It's just...weird, though...I'll see if it continues to run smoothly and it may just be a question I'd have to ask Geek Squad rather than haul the whole laptop there.

Maybe if I'm real nice, my parents'll let me use part of the money I get back to buy Turok...

Okay, I'm take it back the other account is just as messed-up as the original one...just a little different I think...I can still access the start bar but I can't launch any new programs.

CTRL-ALT-DEL gave me "Failure-Security Options" eventually-and now it's stuck on a black screen...

If it's at all important I've only got the AC power plugged in, I took out the battery pack because of all the BSODs I was getting due to the network card issue.

Also, my parents seem to think the best option is to turn this thing over to Geek Squad while I believe an exchange might be the best option although that still might end up involving Geek Squad 'cause they'd likely have to transfer all my personal files over to the new primary hard drive...

Yep, labor day weekend and I'll probably have my gaming laptop stuck at Geek Squad-how FREAKIN' COOL IS THAT?! I get two days off and I'll have absolutely nothing fun to do!!

Can you check your IRQ's to see if the wireless is sharing?

Okay, the "Safe" mode is officially mucked-up too. I tried to back-up the video files again and suddenly the whole thing locked up again.

So can anyone tell me if it's more likely a hardware issue or a software issue. Should I just forget about the 56GB of videos (I do have maybe a third of them copied over to the G-Drive) and try a full revert to be absolutely sure?

And Syngensmyth, if you were referring to the first part of my previous post read the rest of it and about all the crazy events that unfolded after that. I have these problems even when networking is turned OFF.

If you're referring to the issues I had with with transferring over the video files to my desktop-which considering what you're quoting is unlikely, then it could be helpful-not sure how but it could...

I tried adjusting the sharing settings but it wouldn't let me get far enough into to it to make a difference.

Because it's an older program and it doesn't recognize DDR3 memory that's all. Don't worry, you do really have DDR3 RAM. If you're really worried, pull down the latest version of CPU-Z for confirmation. I'm assuming it'll show you what type of RAM you have... ;)

I was going thru same question and finally opened up back of laptop to see what is inside and yes it is DDR3 RAM. The only program that picksup correctly the hardware of system is SiSoftware Sandra Lite XII.SP2c, download and install it as I felt that to be very good diagnostic as well as benchmarking program.

"Empowering technology is not ready" something about trying it again or restarting the computer-the recovery management thing is apparently not working or something...

Might have to try a clean install...but how the heck do I get the drivers back? I mean, do I need to burn all the drivers to a DVD on my desktop in order to get them on the laptop since the network card thing wouldn't work. But then again would the drivers for the DVD-ROM work or not?

Indeed. I read for 30 minutes and was only 1/4 way through. Kinda like watching LOR. I fell asleep 3 times and still watched the credits roll ;)

Okay, the clean install appears to have worked. Also, a clean install with Vista actually seems to automatically keep all of your original files in a .windows_old folder or something like that-very convenient I guess but it's worrisome on a certain level if there's like viruses or some such that were causing the problem they could potentially still affect the computer...

Well, anyway-now all the games on the G drive are still there, but they don't "register" on the computer, just like I thought. Anyone know where I can find all the original registry information or whatever I need so that the computer will register all the games and such as being installed and they would be in the start menu and such?

Also, I may need the link to all the drivers and such again.

Ah, nevermind I think I found it.

This is a known issue. There are about a million threads here on the 7811 and RAID.
