They're out of stock and more than likely will never be in-stock again. I was one of the people who informed the forum about the deal for the refurbished 7811's and the stock sold out completely so fast. Even when they said they'd have more stock, it went away within hours. Sorry to say but at this point your only option is probably E-Bay.

You should be glad. It seems like all the refurbs from Tiger Direct have issues on one level or another. Lock-ups during games seems to be the running theme atm.

once you update drivers and bios the lockups should go away from what I understand.

I will let you know once I get mine.

Changed my bios to 9c.09.00 and my graphics driver to Forceware 179.48. I don't have any games installed yet but its running pretty smooth. Once I get done here at work I will go home and try a few games (L4D, WoW, and Dawn of war)

I've got mine and modified it to my satisfaction for photoshop and other graphics programs, so I love it. But lots of my photographer friends want one now too...............5 months after I got my P7811 FX.

Went to gateway's site and found a similar model with 1 GB of GPU RAM and a 320GB HD for $1299 at best buy exclusively. Think it's the same or better than our P7811 FX's?

    Hey, Raymond -

That's the Gateway FX P-7805u at Best Buy.

It's pretty much the same as the P7811's, with a few upgrades, like a larger HD and the 1G GPU, for example.

As is the FX P-7801u at Newegg.

I already installed two 320 GB 7200 RPM Seagates in there and I've never seen DVD's "stuttering" on this screen so I guess a 512MB GPU is all right for photoshop and the stuff I do. I also moved up to a clean install of Vista Ultimate 64 bit and love it despite all it's difficulties in playing well with others.....

I'll let my fellow photographers know about best buy.

I gamed for 3 hours last night about an hour in WoW and 2 hours in L4D. I didnt have any lock ups. I didn't check load temps but idle my CPU was around 31C and my GPU is at 44C. I checked it again this morning because I was setting up my torrents for the day and it was still running smooth as butter.... So I dunno so far i'm happy with my refurb.

Does anyone know of a program that will allow me to control my GPU fan speed? Nvidia Ntunes gives me BSOD's when I try to use it and RivaTuner requires that i disable driver signature requirements which looks like it will be too much work and may also cause my system to become unstable.

I want to crank up my GPU fan to see if that helps keep my system from locking during some games.

Then I envy you. Here is a great example just from tonight playing Medieval 2: Total War:

9 min 36 sec before lock up @ max settings (1920x1200). PC locked up and I had to do a hard restart. After the hard restart:

5 min 04 seconds before lock up @ default settings (1280x768).

This is with a Zalman ZM-NC2000 running at full blast underneath, nvidia 179.48 drivers, nvidia performance 6.2 @ default settings (won't let me change fan speeds but i'd love to have them running at 70-80%) and all other drivers and window updates up to date. Doesn't matter if I run these games as admin, or even in XP SP2 compatibility mode, the results are the same. The only game that won't lock up is WAR and I have no idea why.

    *update*
I'm not sure what is going on but now any program that is gfx intensive locks up now. I updates to nvidia system manager 6.2 and nvidia 179.48 drivers so one of those must be the culprit. either that or my system is starting to die. might have to call up gateway soon.

x2. Been running 3 days straight (just got mine monday) with close to 9 hours of gaming done and no restarts or lock ups :D

EDIT: also like to add that my Cryo LX is still on the lowest setting, and my temps are freaking awesome.

This may have already been mentioned, but as these are refurbs, has anyone checked to be certain the CPU/Northbridge/GPU thermal solutions are properly installed? AS5 (or simillar) on the CPU in the correct amount, thermal pad (or copper shim) on the Northbridge, and whatever is the proper thermal solution on the GPU?

If these laptops were returned to Best Buy as "defective" they have probably been gone over by "technicians" who may not be trained in the correct way to install thermal solutions. All of these lock-ups and BSOD's sound like thermal issues..

    Just my $0.02 YMMV

Hey I'll take your $.02 too.....

I have a P7811 FX and since I just use it for photoshop it does not overheat. I have latest video and phoenix bios and 2 HD's installed on a cooling pad when at home. I met a woman photographer with a white gateway that said M below the screen where mine says FX. Her 13-14 inch gateway got hot enough to cook eggs on. It was just radiating tremendous heat from the keyboard after running a few hours. All she did was search websites during that time.

Of course since I was there repairing another computer she asked me if this was normal. I told her I had no idea. Ya think I should call her and say to take it back if it's under warranty. Is this a serious gateway problem across all the lines?

Hmm.. those small notebooks can produce some heat cause everything is all cramped up in there. Before any warranty claims, just download HWMonitor and check the temps - http://www.cpuid.com - then decide.

I've been browsing through the forums for quite some time now for various issues I have been having with my laptop.

I recently downgraded my laptop to XP Pro after I was fed up with the waste of resources that was Vista and I was more interested in some better performance on some older games.

I got through most of the downgrading tutorial with ease only running into a couple issues along the way, but now I have found myself in a rut again.

I have had no problem in the past hooking my laptop up to my 50" plasma in the past, with Vista x64, but now I'm on XP Pro and with the whole audio work-around it has proven to be impossible for me to be able to play audio through my plasma. HDMI is working for picture, just absolutely no way for me to configure the audio. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey I'm new here, just made my account because I'm dying for an answer. I've been looking into purchasing a BlackMagic Intensity Pro capture card to run in my laptop, to record from my XBOX360 and home movies and such. I was just curious if I could even use it in my laptop? I'm not sure if I have the required source to plug it in to. Any help is greatly appreciated.

btw, my laptop is off the shelf, I haven't done any upgrade or anything of the sort

Ok, been a while since I've been here but I found out a new problem with my P7811

I can't read any flash memory... I tried to re-install the O2 media drives, everything seems fine, but one I plug a flash memory stick or a camera it doesn't detect. I can't see it. Vista will search for drivers but won't find anything.

Has anyone got this before? How could I fix this?

What BIOS are you running?. I've just stuck with the 9C.08.00 BIOS. Anything newer than that has given me sound/USB/flash card reader issues.

Alright, I had the 9C.17.00 installed. I tried 9C.05, .10 and .12 with no luck getting my flash hardware to work... I still get that 'found new hardware' when I plug them and can't get them to work no matter what.

    Any more tips?

I don't know if I had it in my package... probably tried it if it was. I saw a bundel posted earlier with all bioses IMV-021 to -35 so I'll try those tonite if I can find the time. I hope this will do it or else I'm out of idea... I'm considering upgrading to Windows 7 to solve that issue. Would that help?

Windows 7 is still Vista, but better. Er, Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. In other words, I doubt upgrading to Windows 7 will fix your issue. Like I said, try 9C.08.00. That's what I've been using for over a year now and no driver issues.

I've had a tip from an IT guy saying that probaly my USB drivers were stuck between 1.0 and 2.0. The thing to do then would be to force install the 2.0 drivers. I've been looking around though and can't find any indications on were the drivers might be or what compagny makes the P7811fx's usb devices.

Somebody knows? or knows were to get the drivers?

Can anyone refer me to a step by step guide on processor replacement for the 7811fx? Diagrams would be nice, but are not required.

I actually also want clean the GPU fan, and need some help explaining how to remove the main bottom panel of the system. I loosened all of the screws but it is still securely attatched in the area of the LCD hinges.

    Hey all,

I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction for some solid drivers for the 7811fx. I plan format and re-install either Windows XP or Windows 7 tomorrow.

I've already been to gateway's official site, and I'm not going there again. It's BS... I'm pretty savvy with computers (Hell, I've already completely reassembled this laptop) but their driver search system leads to multiple drivers for each category. Maybe somebody has saved the correct drivers and wants to send them my way? I've got the video drivers covered, since I can just get those from Nvidia's site. I'm not sure what else I will need-- I'm assuming Bios, Chipset, Audio, Modem, Wireless Internet.

I'll be reinstalling today so any help or files would be great. Thanks a bunch!

I've had 2 500GB, Fujitsu and Seagate, drives in mine for 1TB. I removed the faulty Seagate 500GB drive so now I have a Fujitsu 500GB and a 320GB Seagate (original). Not sure what the limit is but as 500GB drives are the biggest so far 1TB is the current max but I am sure it will support more, maybe up to whatever Win7 supports.
