I would advise trying the factory install of Vista 64 before putting XP on there. Believe me, I've been a strong supporter of XP, but I've been using this laptop for a few weeks now with Vista 64 and I have to admit I like it a lot. I won't be running out to purchase Vista for my desktop computers, but I'm perfectly happy with the installation on my 6860. You definitely want to get rid of the crapware/trialware, but after that the OS is nice. Then if you use it for a while and don't like it, then blow it away and go back to XP. Just a thought... ;)

Can any owners of the 7811 with the original Vista OS on there tell me what the name of the audio driver is?

That's what I see whenever I update or rollback my MS UAA Bus driver for HD audio. But if I restart, then the Conexant HD Smart Audio 221 and NVIDIA HDMI audio disappear. They will reappear if I update/rollback MS UAA again.

I think it might be a combo. But I'm not sure. I seem to remember installing it at some point through Conexant.

Hm.. I tried all the links from that link you gave me. None of them worked. When installing, I got "FAILURE" for all of them. They still extracted some .infs and other files so I tried their "Have Disk" method anyway. But when selected the .inf it said that there were no driver instructions or something, and to make sure it was compatible with x64.

Strange the 68xx people can't help. Doesn't anyone else use XP/Vista 64? Or is this a new audio chip for Gateway?

Anyoen else notice that gateway.com lists the MSRP of this laptop as $1399? Is that the correct MSRP or do you think it was a typo because I think it is weird how this laptop is a bestbuy exclusive, but they are charging over MSRP.

Ok, I've been on this problem all day. The only thing that isn't working on my XP64 version of the 7811FX is the audio. I'm fairly sure its a Conexant audio driver I'm needing. I've installed so many different audio drivers my head is spinning. I feel that the problem is I can't really find an XP64 version of the Conexant drivers. I often get the message when trying to make sure the drivers were made compatible with x64. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and just reinstall Vista... Oh Vista, how I hate thee.

Good micro review. my last two GW lappys had the cd rom located in a spot that was subject to frequent inadvertenttriping. would have been almost disappointed if GW had fixed that as i have become used to it over the past 6yrs

all my 32 apps loaded and functioned well under 64 too. so far.
pidded about no raid option, looking forward to a work around.

got no use for a stupid num pad - seems to frustrate my typing as my fingers dont land where they should unless I move my wrists over to the left about 3 inches beyond middle (normal) spot. in fairness I do however recall having to get used to my last gw lappy keyboard too. comes quickly. it'll be fine. ;)

My opinion of Best Buy DRASTICALLY decreased with a simple camera lens about a year ago. Nikon has a lens, the 18-200mm DX VR zoom that was/is highly sought after. It seems Best Buy got a line on these lenses and were charging almost double the MSRP of $749.99. The manufacturer(Nikon) has finally upped production and there is more than enough supply available. Best Buy is now only raping the customers by $100-$150. But, I still shop there, on occasion, so I guess I like it.

dude, gw doesnt nearly have the corner on the market for retards in csvc. it has been that way for several years now across the board. if you need cs call microsoft and choke up the $35 bucks per incident. you will fix your problem and be off the phone with a cool one in your had in an hour instead of 4 or 5 with no resolution :D . I still have two computers from the old days with LIFETIME support from GW. I am going to keep those computers alive just to f**k with GW for the next 40 years asking for drivers and updates etc :p .

I've got the collector's edition pre-ordered at GameStop.

Back on-topic. I don't think I got all my "upgradability" questions answered.

I want to know from people who own the laptop specifically if there's a caddy already in place for a second hard drive, and whether the GPU/CPU components can be replaced/upgraded.

Currently I don't intend to upgrade it anytime too soon after I buy the thing (aside from the 2nd 320 GB hard drive)-but it would be very good to know for the future, especially considering that I've heard the Toshiba X350 is supposed to be FULLY upgradeable.

I have been poking around my new 7811. The following are my observations and guesses about upgrade paths.

The CPU is definitely an easy upgrade, but only to another socket P processor (which currently tops out at the P9500).

I have not opened the hard drive cover, but from the manual it looks like everything you need for another hard drive is already inside the machine.

There appear to be only 2 antenna wires, so upgrading from the Intel 5100 wireless card to the 5300 looks difficult or impossible.

Next to the wireless card, there is an open slot that looks like a micro-PCI slot. The mounting posts leave less room than for the wireless card, which I believe is a mini-PCI card. You can probably add a micro-PCI Turbo Memory card here.

The DVD drive is a SATA model and is easily removed by loosening one screw. When prices fall a bit, I plan to replace this drive with a Blu-ray drive.

I don't know if the motherboard or BIOS will support 4 GB SO-DIMMs. The chipset does support a total of 8 GB of RAM, so in theory you could pull out one or both of the existing 2 GB SO-DIMMs and replace them with 4 GB models if they ever get cheap enough.

That's all I've discovered so far. I don't know about the GPU as it appears to be buried under a fan and difficult to reach.

    Enjoy,
    Ira

Best Buy has a deal right now where you can get Vista Ultimate for $69.99 with the purchuse of a CD. Is Ultimate so much better than Premium that it would be worth the upgrade?

I think this may have come up earlier in the thread, but does anyone know if the necessary XP 32 drivers exist for this computer, and how to go about collecting them if they do? I'm planning on switching the OS on mine, and I want to make sure it's going to be possible before I order XP.

The control panel aplet that ships with the 7811 does not have that nice check box for disabling when an external mouse is connected. You can however select the synaptics device and hit the disable button. That will disable the touch pad unconditionally.
