This may sound like a stupid request...

What kind of things can I do to improve the performance of my gateway m680? Such as new drivers, and how to remove "bloatware" and such.

What are some decent internet security, and anti-spyware programs?

Is norton and mc'fee (?) alright?

it's not a stupid question, it has in fact been asked many times before and there is a guide in the hardware section

reformatting a hard drive and doing a fresh install of an OS is always a sure fire way to boost performance and remove bloatware, but it's not for the faint of heart and you need to know what you're doing. Check the Dell forum for a sticky at the top that has a step-by-step guide on reformatting -- it is slightly different for each manufacturer though.

lol, Windows Xp is already bloatware.

Though far better than previous OS, it's still saddled with legacy codes.
