Ok, Need some advice:
I am in a position, becasue of BB holiday return policy, to trade my 7811 in for a 7805u.
The 7811 ran me 1400 after tax, and the 7805u will be 1050+tax.
Should I bother?
Are all the 7805u's screens 1900x1200 or is it just some?
-
All screens are 1920x1200. I would swap them out but pick up the three year black tie protection. Should be about $349.99, but with that you have the ability to drop it in 2.5 years and get the $1049.99 back in store credit towards the new FX, or anything in the store.
-
Thanks Big, exactly what I wanted to hear, now all I have to do is remove the 2nd drive I put in, wipe the hdd and off we go to BB
-
Glad to help, good luck to you and enjoy!
-
I am looking online right now, I don't see anything about selling it back and getting it for what you got it for
-
It's a special holiday return policy, where if you bought it within a given time frame you get an extended return policy due to the holidays.
-
Wow, thanks for the info, +rep, I will think about getting this.
-
Oh, you were talking about the Black Tie Protection, if we no longer carry the model you had and it cannot be fixed you will receive what you paid for it in the form of store credit.
-
oh, well I doubt that I will find a way to make it so there is no way they can fix it or get me a replacement in the next few years :S
-
Lol, it covers accidental damage, drop it down the stairs. They will be able to fix it but the cost to fix it will the same as the price of a new system + labor, so they will just give you a new one. I guess I forgot to mention that, if the repair cost exceeds the cost of a new laptop they will simply replace it/give you store credit.
-
Do you have any information and how to replace the processor in the P7805U? I would love to buy the T9600 or T9800 processor. Even if you pay 550 for the processor, the laptop is worth 1600.
thanks.. -
They haven't changed the assembly yet, you can follow this guide. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=256839&highlight=6831+cpu+upgrade+guide
-
I just opened my P 7805u tonite, it was exactly the same as the 6860.
-
Thanks a bunch..I just printed out the instructions/pics.....NewEgg has the T9600 2.8GHz for 559.99 and the T9400 2.53GHz for 369.99. I am buying the T9600 2.8ghz. I bought a Dell XPS 1730 2 years ago for 2500 and this computer is cheaper and faster. You got to love technology!
-
Hey no problem, glad to know someone's got money to spend. Congratulations and good luck!
-
My daughter works at a Best Buy in Ohio and she told me about the laptop. She is a full time student and works during holidays and summer vacation. No employee discount on this one...I ran up and bought it tax exempt for my business....
-
One more thing. I don't understand why DDR3 1333 (pc3 10666) is cheaper than DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500). Anybody upgraded the ram on their P7805U?
-
You're assuming that BB will still be in business in 2.5 years!
-
I had a similar idea, except, I just (tonite) picked up a Dell Latitude E6400 at their Outlet with a T9600, 3GB RAM, WXGA+ LED backlit display, 9 cell battery and Bluetooth, etc., for $747!!! I was thinking of swapping CPU's, and selling the E6400 for what I paid (which, with the T9600 comes to over $1600 at Dell.com, on sale (over $2000 list)! I should easily be able to sell the Dell w/P8400 for what I paid. Can you say Free upgrade?
-
whow..Great Deal on the Dell...
-
yeah, sometimes I the deals I find are so good, I think they must be pricing mistakes...
I bought the E6400 with the sole intention of ripping out the T9600...Dell's are soooo easy to work on. They design them now so the whole bottom literally screws off, giving you access to everything! -
That is why I bought my Dell Laptop. It is easy to upgrade the RAM and Hard Drive. I bought 2 extra hard drive sleds for my XPS. I have 320 gig hard drives/7200 speed in each sled running different operating systems..(Windows XP Pro 64 bit and Vista 64 bit)...

On the 7805U laptop, what is needed to make it bluetooth? I opened up the back and saw the wireless card with an empty slot next to it. Is that where the bluetooth card goes? What model number do you order?
thanks... -
@dmevid, the empty slot is for a PCI-E mini half card. I haven't found 1. Many PCI-E mini cards bluetooth though. Dell has like 3 models. If you want that, you have to buy a Intel 5100 mini half card, or a 5300 mini half (2 antennae or 3 antennae version)... all are available at Dell.
Or if you don't mind losing 1 USB slot, get a mini blue tooth usb receiver. -
The problem is, there may be an extra mini-cpi slot, but there is no antenna wire, so if you put a bluetooth card in, your range (if any) will be terrible. It's too bad Gateway doesn't put enough antenna wires in for all the slots. Dell has antenna wires for everything, regardless of whether or not you ordered the card.
-
Someone has got to try it first before we conclude this "terrible" range does make adding stuff in those mini card slots next to useless.
-
thanks for the advise. When you say you haven't found one, does that mean they are hard to get? Also, you mentioned the Dell with 3 antennas. Will that work in the Gateway and just get the 2 antenna model..I would rather get the bluetooth card then to lose a USB port.
-
probably a dumb question...but is their a combo-wireless-bluetooth card available??
-
@dmevid, yes, older tech... not wifi- draft N i think.
-
Check out this link about adding bluetooth. There's a Dell bluetooth card and antenna links in the thread.
