Hey guys, thanks for the input and thanks for the heads up on the cross over posts....Just to let the gentlemen know, I did make backup disks, and read the complete manual before using the notebook. I purchased a seperate hard drive and the disks were not recognized. Furthermore, I was not able to choose a boot device in the BIOS when the new hard drive was installed (before or after setting a new user password in the security). Gateway knows all of this and still avoids the issue....THEY MADE THIS PRODUCT. And yes most of the information was backed up, but I still don't have a notebook. Thanks again for the interest. Oh by the way, my father in-law is a programer and has built many machines himself and still wonders why Gateway hasn't done anything.

Did you get this notebook from Best Buy? I'd almost bring it back over there and have them deal with it. From what I've read Gateway doesn't offer support on the "retail" computers, those are ones you buy in Best Buy, Circuit City etc. Sounds like you've got issues beyond just the disc problem.

All Gateways have a Boot Menu. All you have to do is hit the F10 key before bootup..

    kap72,

Which model did you buy from BB? I'm thinking to get the 6518gz from them.

    Tom,

Never had a problem with my Gateway. However, I work as a computer technician so if problems occur, I'm more able to handle them.

I was reading a post about someone who bought a GW at BB and Gateway support wouldn't help them. According to this person who was having the problem there are "two" Gateway's. The retail version you buy in a store, which results in no help from Gateway tech, and the other is Gateway you buy direct from their site, which offers help on those models.
