 i think i read WAY WAY too many threads about people getting dead machines, beeping machines, overheating machines, blue screening machines, crackling machines, people who got the 138 1920 who had problems and people who got the 139 1440 who had problems,

it seems rare for anyone to get a 7805u FX without SOME type of issue (or maybe those who are happy never post here)..should my first step be to make backup cds and then just load Windows 7 64 on it? Already ordered a cooler from newegg so doubt i'll do any heavy gaming until that arrives.

already preparing myself to call TD and ask for a replacement...took me 15 minutes with them just to confirm my paypal order, they wanted last 4 of social, what car i drove and when i bought it (weird) and gave me a list of names of people and asked if i knew them...do they do a credit report check for paypal payments??

    Excited are we? :p

Yes the first thing you should do is make your back up Discs and store them in a safe place.

As to whether or not you should install Win7? Thats up to you. I love it, but i also understand that when the "actual" Win7 is released i will have to do yet another reinstall of everything. Due with my SSD installing windows takes like 16 minutes.

As to the "problems" thats hust the luck of the dice when it comes to refurbs. Most of the time people perfectly happy with a machine will never search out our forum, because they have no reason to. Its the people with problems hoping for a solution that mostly come here (hopefully we make a good impression and they stay)

As to a cooler... they are nice, but assuming your machine isnt just slagged you should be fine to play any game on the 7805 with out a cooler. Coolers help but arent required so long as you're not sporting some insane OC.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask, thats why we're here :)

I have a refurb 7805u with WUXGA and besides the really flexy chassis and some annoyance with the glossy screen, mine really has no issues to speak of. It does get fairly warm and I would recommend a cooler. If you don't have a cooler at least elevate the back to get more airflow.

Oh yeah, and I love this machine. It's like a world of difference playing games compared to my T61p 15.4" which I thought was "ok". After getting this, I realized what I was missing out on :p

My first refurb was defective one (something with one of the CPU cores and constant BSOD's). My second 7805u (replacement) works perfectly.

I got the Zalman NC2000 Cooler with it as well and I don't regret it. As I play a lot of games for long periods of time.

My main complaint with the laptop (design, not the refurb) is the keyboard. They definitely should have swapped the left ctrl key and the Fn key. It's pretty annoying when it comes to the fact that left ctrl is vital in most FPS games.

sold my Asus 5100 to get this one, hopefully everything works out (not here yet) the Asus was painfully slow doing WOW or any other Game really, not to mention the battery life was around 1.5 hours or less on most days. Ordered the Rosewill cooler, it was onsale yesterday for 39.99 and free shipping. Not hard to see how buying accessories could really ramp up the price of this laptop quite a bit...

still need to order a blu-ray and probably a faster HD for the Boot.

I got my 7805u a month ago and it's been great. Zero problems. The stock cooling system works well, so I wouldn't be too paranoid about playing games without a cooler. I do have an NZXT Cryo LX though, I love it, worth the price tag.

got it...stomach is sick waiting for something to blow up...no weird noises yet from the power supply, waiting for the computer to set itself up...no apparent dead pixels yet with the all black screen...no weird burning smell yet...very very clean looking, nice that it's not like some refurbs that show wear and tear (i guess for $800 they might want to make sure it looks somewhat new).

is that ultimate gaming sticker easily removeable? Or is that best left on. I guess i shouldn't do anything crazy until i learn if it's a keeper or not.

when i hold the ac adapter up to my ear (which i can't remember doing with any other ac adapter) i hear some type of scratchy raspy noise...hopefully that's normal. It's not loud at all and you can't hear it unless you hold it to your ear.

I see why people tend to buy the SSD...the HD it comes with is pretty noisy. I'll probably have to do an upgrade so that it runs silent.

when i got my 6831 back in Jan. from ebay for $635 it came without any scratches. it said on the ebay page it was refurbished. the major problem with it, is that the 250gb drive failed within 2 months and the power brick is cracked open. i will have to buy a new one in the future. but everyone is right, that power brick sucks monkey oranges.

Yes, my AC adapter for my 7811 does the same thing; especially after a ton of game playing. When it gets really hot and I shut down the system the adapter would make a sizzling noise. I feel like I can cook an egg on that brick.

Some others have recommended the Targus 180W power supply (huge) but I figure I'll just use the stock one till it dies (or starts a fire).

kirghton, I'd also suggest making an image of the stock hard drive. That way you can always revert back to the original image quite easily (no re-installing required). I took the hard drive out and put it in my desktop and used Acronis True Image.

Yes, actually i was just thinking of making an image of the drive after i run the latest updates and get the garbage ware uninstalled. Tuck it away someplace safe just in case i want or need to go back.

Tiger Direct seems to be the standard place people purchase it...i think they still have some in stock for $849.00 US....prepare to have no luck making backup CDs with their Recovery management...will cost $20.00 to get replacements from Gateway. Trying to back this drive up via Acronis in the mean time but running into problems, so scanning the HD for bad sectors (which you wouldn't think there would be any).

    Enjoy your 7805

Grats on getting your P7805u. Hey I read that your going to make an image of your drive once you get it the way you want. I recommend that you use deepfreeze or at least give it a chance. Here is the link: http://www.faronics.com/html/deepfreeze.asp . Just a thought.

i'm trying Acronis right now...had to put the drive internal to another computer it seems as it didn't like to be off a usb port...if i fail i'll certainly try that program, thanks.

My refurb was practically new, and was in pseudo-perfect condition. Although I got a defective battery, I quickly got a new replacement.

Can't think of a better deal on a laptop with these specs.

I had no problems backing up everything with the Gateway program. :D

wonder why some can back up the cds and some can't, weird...got the Acronis backup to work so even better i have an exact image (as long as the external drive i put it on doesn't die). Also coughed up the $20 for recovery cds from Gateway, never hurts to have originals, also helps resells down the road.

The reason some people cant make Recovery Discs is because Gateway Recovery for some unknown reason is a 1 time use only mechanism (worst time bombed program ever! ) so if the original owner made the discs then the next owner is pretty well screwed if they didnt ship back the recovery with the laptop.

You would think Gateway would let us make infinite copies of recovery discs... but i guess its something they didnt consider :(

ah, well, i guess it makes 'sense' that i can't make them then...no biggie really, i may end up putting windows 7 on it since i've made the image...might even just put the original hard drive aside and get an SSD for the primary and put 7 on that. Thanks for the get info, very helpful website.

i hope you have the same luck i've had so far (fingers crossed). looks brand new, acts brand new, plays WOW flawless (only game i've tried so far). Put vid drivers 186.03 and no issues so far...going to get a blu-ray drive next i guess, probably wait a bit for the SSD, maybe the prices will come down some.

Tigerdirect is a pretty big company... i remember YEARS ago they used to send out catalogs and word got around pretty well about them that way.

They are a good place to buy if you want something specific (as they can have some relly good deals) but sometimes you have to deal with their inefficency to get what you want... they arent exactly underhanded or anything, just a bit slow on the uptake sometimes.

I tend to prefer newegg though. Anyone that can get me a SSD from New Jeresy to Alabama in 22 hours is pretty tops in my book :p

got the Rosewill 17" cooler today from Newegg, very nice and fits perfect, 39.99 on sale and free shipping. Also ordered the Windows 7 Home Premium to replace the Vista on the 7805. $49.99 shipped when it's out in October, 58% off retail so not too shabby.

One family member got it about 2-3 weeks ago in FL.
I had to wait until another family member went and get it. Well they are getting on the plane in a few hours on their way back.

Speakers are half way okay, as are all laptop speakers are in my opinion. Volume output is good though.

Expect to want to buy a good set of headphones if you don't already have a pair.

    UPS only delivers on weekdays.
