I am working on a gateway Gateway 4540GZ . The problem is that the USB ports are not working. Been trying to figure out why for awhile now. I did a clean install of XP, the USB is still not working. Checked the bios settings made sure legacy device's was enabled. Updated the motherboard drivers. Checked the device manager.
I plugged a usb hub into the laptop port. The usb hub received power, but it was not recognized by windows.
So can the USB ports on a laptop still send power to a unit but lose their ability to connect to device's (e.g. Mouse, camera, printer).
    I am just stumped.

If this problem can not be fixed, i was looking into a USB PCMCIA card bus. I have researching and it sounds like the cardbus's with a NEC chipset can be a pain....can any one confirm this.
