I just bought a Gateway 7405GX Notebook with Athlon 64 Processor and Widescreen. It is a great piece except for it's ultrabright screen feature. The reflective coating prevents me from working for hours at length and my right eye seems to be hurting more than the left. I have tried a anti-glare filter as well. It didn't help much. I don't want to return it -- I love all it's other features; plus I don't want to pay the restockng fee.
Does anyone have any suggestion.

You could buy some prescription glasses with anti-glare quality, but their expensive and you'd need to see an optometrist.
As the screen is the main point of interaction between a computer and human, I'm baffled that you'd want to keep a notebook that is hurting your eyes. I think maybe the best thing to do would be to bite the bullet and just exchange this notebook for something with a non-glare screen. -
Why is this post in the ASUS sector?

Hi Abaxter,
I checked out a bunch of different machines before I bought this. Been to Best Buy about 5-6 times since Thanksgiving. I even bought an HP, used it for 1 week and then returned it. Paid the restocking fee and everything. I am starting two new contracts this week and just cannot afford the time. Wasn't aware of antiglare prescription eye glasses. Thanx for the tip. I'll look into it.

You might want to see if there is a lamp or light source near your position that can be moved. The only time the glare is even noticeable for me is when there's a light source either directly behind or just to the side & behind me. The rest of the time I don't notice any glare at all.

I already tried moving the lamp around. Did not help much. I found out today that Best Buy is the only one that charges 15%restocking fee. Neither Fry's nor CompUSA have any such restrictions any more. Best Buy's manager refuses to make any exceptions. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and lose some money here.
Thanx Anyway!!! -
Ironic....I love my UltraBright.

I just returned from Best Buy and I have to agree with crosseyed. Almost all the Xbrite, TruBrite, UltraBrite, WhateverBrite screens are highly reflective and full of glare. I could see everything on the Best Buy shelf behind me. Why does anyone think these are good screens?
I was on the verge of buying the 7422GZ but I declined solely because of the screen. -
The glare is only occasional. Unless you plan to use your notebook in constant direct light, you should be fine. BB has really bright lighting, and that's why there's so much glare. I don't get any on my screen at home.

Look at these shots of somebody's Gateway. In the third photo, you can see the flowerpot in the screen as clear as a mirror.
