I'm completely new to computers, so please help me with this? I am looking to update the drivers for my graphics card. How would I go about doing this? It says the driver version is 7.15.11.6746 for the nvidia geforce 8800M GT video card. Ok when I click update driver it says searching online for updates or something along those lines. Then after a moment it says my driver is up to date with the latest driver. How can this be? I don't have the reboot disk with me right now, so I don't want it to crash. How are yall updating your drivers with no problems? Please help me figure this out, without any problems. Thanks

Im not sure what you are trying to get at, but if it says its up to date...then it is up to date for your specific laptop. If you want different drivers you have to download it else where lk laptopvideo2go.com. The drivers from the internet does not come from your laptops manufacture...they are modified and whatnot.

ps if you want to make sure you can just go on nvidia.com to check for your specific card for a driver you want.

Yup...I went to nvidia's website and checked the 8800 GT and GTS and both version had higher number's than the one I have. And when I download them and try and run the installer it was always say it couldn't find any devices compatible with the driver.?.

MOST people get drivers from other websites that offer modified drivers since manufacturers and such dont update their drivers as much as they sell laptops. try laptopvideo2go since thats the most widely used website for drivers.good luck

The reason I was gonna do this, was because on 1440 x 900 COD4 will lag just a little bit especially when the choas and explosions start happening. Do yall have any reccomendations for fixing this? Oh, and if I do update the driver. What is the step by step directions for this? Oh and if something screws up how would I fix it back to the way it was.

You're most likely trying to download the unified driver set for the desktop variant of the card. That would explain the error you're getting.

You have to either wait for the manufacturer to release new drivers or go to an alternate source like Snowsurfer mentioned.

Kind of a cool program I've been using to manage drivers for all of my PC's at home. Sure makes it easier to manage drivers for 4 notebooks, 2 desktops, and 2 servers.

If you are having crashing issues, then its not necessarily your driver, as much as it is, the Gateway overheating.

It's been a prominent issue, and the fix is:

The real problem is overheating. The Gateway P-6831 fx overheats after dust buildup gradually stocks your vents.

The drivers help. Having XP helps. All these other mediocre solutions simply reduce the heat load.

    THE GATEWAY IS FINALLY FIXXED.

The real problem is the heat. And to fix this take a can of compressed air, make sure to not be too close, as to avoid leeking fluid into the laptop, and blow it into the sides and under the laptop, this should rid of most of the dust, and allow you to play crash free. I still prop my laptop on top of a book, as well, since I usually have the highest settings enabled.

But finally this darn mystery is solved.

Please repost this and spread the word as much as possible. Heesh, thank goodness, cause Gateway sure as hell wasn't quick to fix anything.

Why are you bumping a 7 month old thread you fool?

And do you not think your mystery solution is actually common sense?

No. If it was 'common sense' there wouldn't be the massive amount of threads/posts related to the Gateway P-6831fx crashing.

Also, apparently you don't have the problem, or else this would be a pretty **** happy day for you. The $1300 gaming laptop that you bought can finally play something other than counter strike: source. I.e., Call of Duty 4, Crysis, Bioshock, Left 4 Dead. All those games that you can only play for 10 minutes at a time before crashing. lol.

Hey royk50, wassup man? It was your post in part that helped a great deal. I thought it wasn't heat related until, COD4, on minimal settings and propped up on my geography book, ran forever.

After knowing it was heat, bingo, I just googled p-6831fx heat crashes. Anyways, thanks for your post about spraying it out w/ the aircompressor. Also, had another guy who said same thing, always great to hear the same answer more than once.
