    Hello all,

I wanted to share my experience with upgrading my LCD to 1900x1200.

As some of you know, I upgraded the LCD before to 1680x1050. It was a great upgrade and I very much enjoyed it. For the work I do, 1440x900 just doesn't cut it (whether its a 15" or a 17" display).

The upgrade to 1680x1050 gave me much more screen space, better sharpness, and still allowed me to play hardcore games (UT3, Crysis, etc...) on max at a higher resolution.

However, I was very temped to go to 1920x1200 because I wanted even more screen space and I wanted to play HD movies on my notebook. My concern was that 1920x1200 would make the text too small. I read many posts about this but I decided to throw caution to the wind.

Now I chose the LG Philips LP171WU3 TL A3 17" for a number of reasons. It had many good comments from users, other 6831 owners have chose this LCD, and it has high specs compared to similar models.

I also had used nothing but Samsung LCDs before so I wanted to try LG. Not that I have any objections to Samsung but LG seemed to be a step up.

I bought the LG Philips LP171WU3 TL A3 17" from SmartMicro USA. I bought my 1680x1050 from them so I thought I would do the LG one as well. They had the model I wanted listed on both their web site as well as their ebay site. The price was $308.00 and a generous return policy.

Now, I want to pass along a secret that I discovered with SmartMicro USA:

When I ordered my LCD, they told me that they did not have the LG model in stock, didn't know when they would get one in stock, but did have a compatible one for the same price. I wasn't shocked as I know they mostly deal in knock offs. They are good knock offs, but still not the name brand.

I was a bit miffed though because they had a running ebay auction going specifying the LG one (not a knock off) so I thought if I won that and did not get the real deal, I would be filing a complaint against them.

Anyway, I took the compatible one and waited for it to arrive. However, when it did arrive it would not work correctly in the 6831. It would show only the upper left corner of the screen.

I called SmartMicro USA back to exchange it. Now, when I spoke to them I mentioned that Gateway had given me this part number: LG Phillips LP171WU3 TL A3 17" as a brand replacement for my notebook. The compatible screen they sent me was not listed at all. "What did they plan to do to resolve my issue?"

Suddenly, they had LG's in stock, well, 1 in stock that must have been missed by their computer. (Yeah, right.) They would ship it out to me right away and I was to RMA the other back. So I think they really do have the name brands in but if the customer doesn't push the issue, they will just send you the compatible screen and hope for the best.

The LG one arrived and worked great!

I can't tell you how nice 1920x1200 is! I downloaded some HD wallpaper and the detail is just amazing. I have one of a beach and you can see the detail of the sand particles.

The people who complain about the text size must have really bad vision. I wear contacts myself and I can see the text perfectly.

I don't think I could go back to anything lower having used this. I don't want to sound arrogant but 1920x1200 should be the default for 17" (heck I would recommend it for 15"). I use PS, VS 2k5, VS 2k8, Dream Weaver, Word, Publisher, etc...and 1920x1200 is great for this.

Also, UT3 on max plays great! Its the game I'm most into right now so I haven't tried out many others yet.

So I couldn't be happier. I'm going to put my 1680x1050 for sale here shortly. Its a great display too.

If you have any questions just let me know,
    K

PS - Now I'm curious about the LED 1920x1200 Apple uses in their MBPs...

    lol.

You'll need to replace the backlights to LED lights.

Did you notice a performance decrease gaming on 1920 x 1200 vs 1680 vs 1050?

Sorry guys, I have been very busy with work...

Ok, I bought my screen at Smartmicro USA. The model # is in my first post.

I'm going to sell the 1680x1050 screen (which is very nice) for around $100.00 so if you are interested let me know.

I will try to upload some of the HD wallpapers that I have.

I may be interested in your screen. It just depends if the WUXGA out of my Dell 1705 will fit the Gateway or not.
I wish I knew the answer before taking both of those lappy's apart.

the wuxga will work out of your 1705 cause i just pulled one out of my friends and put it in mine :) you have to remove the top bracket and inverter from the wuxga screen before putting it yours which can take a little time but can be done just be careful .

Here are a couple of pics of MacBook Pro 17 inch LCD panels (not LED ones though). Do you think by the look of the mounting holes that it will fit in a 6831?

Did you have to get a screen with the inverter or were you able to use the existing one on your 6831? I have a 6860 and I'm planning to get one of these LG screens to upgrade.
