Hey all, I'm having a few issues with my computer after doing a direct upgrade (not a fresh install) from Vista 64 to Windows 7 64 on my P6860 lappy. The operating system seems pretty ok in general, a bit prettier, but no faster that I can notice. I've been having a few strange issues with it though.
One is when I am on skype, most of the time it will be fine, but it seems if it goes onto the screensaver, like if i'm idle for an extended amount of time, the skype will not respond. Then I try to close it and it takes me a few tries just to get it loaded again and when I do it will not connect. No error message, just loads and loads and loads.
Also, firefox will do something similar, it will close due to not responding, then when i try to open it later, it wont load at all. Nothing. A computer restart fixes the issues though for both.
They're pretty annoying so far. It's not toooooo bad, but it definitely didn't happen in Vista. Which is weird, all i've heard is that Windows 7 is so much better than Vista... oh well. I am contemplating a fresh install. This Windows 7 seems to be a bit touchy!
I guess I should have learned from my past experience and not tried to fix what wasn't broken!
Any tips at all for what I might be able to change would be helpful. Since it was fully working in Windows Vista I doubt I need to do something drastic like update the bios or anything, but who knows. I've updated the video card driver and the sound driver since my upgrade, but that's pretty much all.
Thanks, -Rotz

This is the problem with upgrades. Upgrades got to be done when you have no other option. With a clean install you get a fast and junk free system. Its true every thing has to be installed again but its worth the pain.

True, I got to find a way to keep my music files though! lol - This would be lots easier with a back up hard drive. I'll have to find one I can borrow. Have about 20 gigs of music on my computer. >.<

If you got space in the current one then partition that and tranfer those to the new partition and do a clean install on the primary partition.

It seems like my internet is just a bit flaky since i've installed windows 7. Since my post I've not have any issues other than internet related ones. I really can't figure out if somehow my ISP has changed their policy on bandwidth cap and my streaming tv is now too much for it, or if its some sort of odd driver issue with windows. My internet seems to vary now between normal very decent speeds to speeds of around 20kbps. And it seems like it cycles between these two maybe once or twice an hour. o.0 Also, restarting the computer brings the internet speeds back up to the normal quickness.
Any suggestions? I find it unlikely that the ISP would change really. I've been streaming movies and playing online video games for years now with the same ISP for probably about 10 years. Strange, strange, strange. Maybe I can update my Wifi driver... is the intel wifi driver that comes with windows 7 particularly iffy to anyone else?
Thanks for the advice so far all. When I borrow someones external hard drive, I will install a fresh copy of Windows 7 and update this post. I will also look into my ISP to see if there have been any changes or maybe I got flagged somehow. /shrug. In the mean time though, I'd suggest shying away from a direct upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista on the p6860 just based on my subjective experience.
Cheers all, -
downloaded the intel wifi driver from the gateway website for vista 64bit and am using it on this windows 7 install and its working smooth. No internet hangs so far.
Upgraded P6860 to Windows 7 now having odd issues
