I can't believe my 7805u has lasted so long, I bought it in 2009 and it's still running strong, never had a single issue (okay that's a lie, it does have it's issues, but nothing major), still plays all the games I want too. I just upgraded from 4GB to 8GB ram yesterday as a treat to make this laptop last a bit longer, I also produce music on it so the extra ram doesn't hurt :) it's such a shame gateway stopped making these laptops because if they did, I would purchase another one from them.

Yes it is, I for one would purchase another if they were still available. I can still remember when best buy was almost giving away the 7805's for 500.00. I thought I was getting a steal on my 7811 for 600.00.

Yes that P-7805u was sure a winner. Mine is still running good. It did much better after I installed Win 7 however. Got rid of all the junk that was installed by Gateway and BestBuy. I paid $1000.00 US but it had the 1920 x 1200 screen.

I love my old gateway! However, I was told that I could not install more than 4 gb ram. Can I install 8? It is listed in my sig

I remember the time I was after a new laptop back in 2009, I had this German laptop that was given to me as the person didn't want it, Pentium 4 thing which could cook your legs to perfecting. I went on ebay for a hunt and I just randomly found the P-7805u from some guy, I live in the uk and the specs were about $800 cheaper than a similar model from some other make, I thought he was an idiot selling it that cheap, so i snapped it up quick!! Best purchase I ever made!! turns out it was the correct price, I really don't know to this day how Gateway actually made much profit on this, might explain why they stopped making it or Acer did anyway!

Yes Ajfountains, I was told the same, but I looked into it and the PM45 express chipset does support 8GB of RAM, I knew about this ages ago and most people had luck with upgrading, so I thought yeah why not as RAM's cheap now. Changed my sig now too!

It also came with Vista, but as soon as Windows 7 came out, I bought it on ebay too, what a mistake that was!!! Turns out it was an almost perfect copy with an MSDN key!! Luckily I knew a guy that had a spare key to give! So lesson learned, avoid buying software on ebay!

    @ omexis,

What type ram did you buy? I tried to order some once from corsair i believe, but their RAM tool only showed me 2x2gb options. I am running windows 7 as well so there should be no OS problems

It was INTEGRAL PC3-10600 DDR3 Laptop Memory - 4GB SODIMM RAM module, 1333Mhz, 9 CAS, laptop recognized it, set clock to 1066Mhz and used the same timings as my old ram did, worked perfected, of course I took my laptop in to the shop, asked if i could buy some ram and install it there and if it didn't work I could get a refund.

CPU-Z screenshots below, also says Part Number 51264Y133I from A Force Manufacturing Ltd.

So 1333mhz works, but needs to be downclocked?

    1) How do you downclock RAM?

    2) What happens if you do not downclock RAM?

You don't downclock RAM it's being done automatically by the controller.

So all i would need to do is stick the memory in and that's it?

Yeah, the RAM has an EEPROM that stores the timings for all frequencies at and lower than the maximum operating frequency of the RAM, the computer reads it and sets the clock and timings appropriately, I know some people have had issues with upgrading to 8GB on the FX, hence why I did it in a shop just in case

Actually it is rare. I think it primarilly was a Crucial stick that caused issues. This as it was really cheap ram and just gave up at command rate 1T. Most ram, espesially at these slower speeds, do not have this issue with just two sticks. I'll agree though, having a shop ndo the upgrade is the safe way in the end............

There are some chips, especially cheaper ones, that will not work in the P78 or P79 laptops. This usually relates to the fact our bios refuses to run in under 1T command rate timing and some memory seems to have issue doing this.................
