I have a Gateway MX6421 that Im looking to upgrade the memory. This Gateway is running Windows 7 Ultimate and currently has 1GB of Ram. The specs say it is upgradable to 2GBs.

I was wondering can I go more then 2GBs running Windows 7 Ultimate, or is 2 GBs the best I can get with the Gateway only having 2 memory slots for sticks?

You cannot install more RAM than the manufacturer specifications. That is due to the limitation of the motherboard

Thats not necessarily true... Id even say half of the time its false... (on older models at least)

You will need to check the chipset for your model to find out its limitations, HOWEVER, keep in mind the MFG (Gateway in this case) could have put something in the BIOS to truly limit the amount...

I have had a few Dell and HP systems that said 2GB was the limit and 4GB worked without issue... well, on one occasion I ran into a "weird" case where It would only with with 3GB, and I read this is more common then my single experience...

As long as you buy it from a store or somewhere online like newegg that does return/refunds (beware "restock" fees) buy a single stick of 2GB and see if that works, if it does, then stick one of your older sticks in with it as well, if it boots up, congrats, you can use 2GB+ whatever you have... or if you have the money to spend, blow it on 4GB and if it doesnt work out get a refund... or sell it locally...

With money, the world is your oasis
