I have a 7805u with the 1gb 9800....i was wondering if anyone has heard of anyone replacing that mobo with that of the 7908 with the 260gpu...... basically a really complexway of upgrading a video card in a laptop and to the quad core's but keeping the 7805u plastics.....i found a mobo for 100.00 bucks and thought it might be worth it...

for $100.00 it may be worth it. if you don't over clock expect about 10% improvement. If you do you could get 10%-20% or so. While we you have the 9800m GTS the 260m is about the equivelant of the 9800m GTX. Also with the 260m you are bypassing any solder issues still carried over to the 9800m, admittedly there should be little to none of those.

While at it, since it is a full tare down., you should go to the modular GPU fan and if upgrading the CPU get the higher TDP heatsink. You won't see your money back but it will give you a faster gaming system.

On that note you have to determine how long you plan to keep the system. if it still suits you well after 3 plus years then the upgrade may be worth another couple of years making it well worth it. If you are disgusted by the performance now another 10% or so is not going to be earth shattering so it may be just throwing money away.............

Where did you find the mb for $100? I have a gpu soldering issue with my 7811fx and this might be good alternative.

P7811's are the early 9800m's. Unfortunately these may still be subject to the solder fiasco. I know nVidia claims they were not but the dates of their official fix just don't support that idea. The newer 9800m's with 1GB are borderline with that time frame though.

The 260m should in no way be affected by solder but the board has its own issues. Primarily is a known issue with power to the USB. Some devices will cause issues. Now Ihave the 180w targus brick and there is one USB port that sems under powered but the other two are fine. I use the under powered one for my cell but if I place the wireless mose there it disconnects intermitently. This is the left bottom port that is affected.

The other nice things is quad cores are supported. Although for most use I would still recomend the higher end C2D's. The 260m is a nice performance boost as well as mentioned.

There was another user, with Razor headphones and mouse, that had issues with the USB. So long as they did not use that hardware and the software they were fine but I don't think these boards like the power requirements or the higher sample rates demanded. I do know there were a few people with issues with those items not just them.

Throw a X9100 in their, O/C your gpu a bit, and you won't tell enough of a difference IMO to do all that work. I got my 7805U 4 years ago when it came out, it was a floor model, and I just recently threw in the X9100, 8GB RAM, 120 SSD, and it fly's now. Plays games just as good as my dedicated gaming desktop.

I plan to use this laptop for a long time, and with the upgrades + the 9800GTS I don't see it going out a date for a bit.

I'm currently playing Tera Online maxed out with no problems at all, and I play out in a car @ night in Florida, so it get's hot in the vehicle.
