Is it plausible to buy a screen like this one http://www.lcdsuper.com/gateway-p-172x-fx-17--laptop-lcd-screen.html
and swap it out. Do you think the upgrade to 1900 is worth 300 dollars?
I'm just wondering. Besides 300 dollars is around what alienware charges just to use a 1900 screen instead of a 1400. Do you think there is anyway for me to sell the old screen.
Also is the install extremely difficult. I'm pretty good with electronics and I can do pretty much anything but I'm just wondering if its incredibly difficult and not worth it.

If you can build a desktop, you can replace the screen. I can able to switch displays between my old Compaq x6000 P4 1680 with my new Gateway 6831 FX. Now, my 4 year old Compaq x6000 has the 1400 and my Gateway 6831 has the 1680. I think the Gateway has accept most display. Check on eBay from cheap display.

I don't really like ebay so I might just buy from this place. Looks like a solid place and I saw it recommended on this forum. I just shot them an email asking them to verify that it was a 1900 x 1200 screen and if it was LG or AUO.
But yea I'll go ahead and do it. It seems easy after all your just disassembling the upper part which really doesn't have too many components. All it has is a webcam and a screen.
Edit: nah your right they are overpriced. I looked on ebay: http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_nkwZ7811Q20FXQ20screenQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZR40QQ_mdoZ
and they have screens buy it now including shipping for 150. -
You mentioned your concern whether it was an LG or an AOU. What is the difference between the two, and how can one tell which is currently installed in the machine?
-
Control Panel->Device Manager->Monitors->Properties
Than look up deviceid from the combo box.
The laptop I got was a AUO 1440....LG> AUO and LG is typically brighter and crisper. Obviously the difference between LG and AUO isn't as huge as the difference between 1900 and 1440. -
LG actually makes a 17" LED-backlit 1920x1200 screen but it's like 700 bucks and I don't know if it'll fit.

I upgraded the screen in my p-7805u fx cause it was the crummy lg 1440 screen. I drove down to http://www.blisscomputers.net and found a replacement that worked, Ask for the tech he may remember which lcd we used. For the record the auo panel i tried first didn't work. The one we ended up using was an lg 1920 wuxga for a dell. He had to use a dremal and remove some bracket but all is good. Oh and the screen only cost me $175.

The one I was talking about (I think) is the LP171WU5. It's $250. I'd LIKE to know whether it fits before considering it as I was almost thinking of getting a 24" standalone monitor in lieu of dealing with this currently subpar stock screen on my 7811.

Is there a screen that is even better than the 7811FX screen?
I was just about to go buy one on ebay for 150 but if there is one thats even higher quality? -
The WU5 is the same screen used on the 17" MacBook. The problem is I have no clue whatsoever if it'll fit in the 7811, or if the inverter in the 7811 will accept it.
It's LED-backlit and the only current 1920x1200 display that I know of that's not a 6-bit TN and can actually do 16.7m colors.
