I did a search but holy cow! Theres information thats spread everywhere.

I just wanted to know, from the people that already did it, what should I know? What problems will there be.. Fixes? Or will the RC install 100% trouble free? I have a stock Gateway 7805u.

    Thanks in advance :)

I updated my 7811FX a couple of weeks ago with no issues whatsoever and they are very similar machines. 7 is really nice: it's a lot faster and looks better too; enjoy!

I partitioned my HD and installed the W7 RC as a dual-boot.

I downloaded the video drivers from the Gateway website - not that newer ones might not work, I just wanted to see if the "default" video drivers would be OK, and they appear to be.

Then, if you give it some time, Win 7 will find and offer to install the drivers for the flash card reader.

Other than that, it appear to be OK.

I was reading Engadgets review.. They are confusing!! First they say this

Still, it's not perfect. On the well-appointed machine we performed an in-place upgrade from Vista on (trust us, a clean install is worth the hassle, learn from our mistakes)

Then a few paragraphs later they say this

Our worst experiences, however, were with a clean install to a quite modern netbook.

I understand its a netbook, but what should I do? Honestly? I hate to have to do a clean install.. I've heard two sides of the story. Gizmodo says its "negligible" difference to do a clean install over an upgrade. But Engadget says different, then contradicts itself.

I've heard from a friend that said "You won't notice a thing if you just upgrade, just the install time will take longer".. Then I hear "I would, in this case, do a clean install"..

I understand a clean install is always best, but to me, I would be spending days upon days doing a clean install and re-installing and backing up, etc.

What do you guys think? Thanks for the help btw!

It is a "release candidate" and will expire next year, so why install it over a Vista that will be good for a few years or more?

If you have enough room on the HD, I recommend the dual-boot install.

Don't worry about problems with a Netbook install. Netbooks, all of them, are not the same as your 7805.

Yea but I hear its must faster, better graphically wise, all in all a well rounded OS that covers all the holes Vista left open? Not true?

What I want to do is just download this and when/if I like it then just purchase a discounted reg key through my work and that would be it.

TnTSniper download with confidence. I clean installed it on my 6860FX and it is a grand OS. It performs fluently and with no hiccups unlike VISTA. Once you get used to it for 2 days you will never go back.

The first time i installed Win7 i did an upgrade, i didnt have any problems with it once i figured out where everthing was relocated to.

But i really would recommend a clean install. Upgrades are nice and easy, but clean installs gives you a brand new system to work with and is feels nice :p

RTM runs great (7811), detected most drivers automatically. Got intel storage matrix, NV card drivers, memory card reader off respective sites (also used Vista x64 drivers for broadcom bluetooth chip I installed).

As I said above I recently did the upgrade on a 7811 with no issues whatever. Downloaded the ISO from Microsoft, burned to disk, popped it in the drive and just followed the on-screen directions, it really couldn't have been much easier. After the install first thing I did was go to Windows Update and pulled down a bunch of new stuff, including a new nVidia driver, let that install, and everything has been peaches and cream since.

The 7811 is very similar to your 7805 (which has Bluetooth but lower screen rez and AFAIK those are the only differences), I don't think you'll have any problem whatever but as usual make a full backup before performing such major OS surgery, just in case. I like to have a clone backup via Acronis, but haven't had to use it.
