I don't seem to be able to find any new laptops that would be a reasonably priced upgrade from my P6831-FX. I'm going to get a T9300 CPU, and want to upgrade the RAM too. Is there a BIOS out there that would accept 8 GB of RAM? Is that even possible? I apologize in advance if that's a stupid question, but it would be really nice to go a little higher than 4 GB from 3.
Are there any other recommended upgrades? I'm mostly doing it to play SWTOR a little "moe betta." Thanks all.

That's the key in doing upgrades, the $! A few of the guy's have used cpu's for sale. The 9300 is OK from old stock but I think you can do a whole lot better if you shop.

You have to have a 64bit OS for full 4gig of ram. Curious, why do you need 8?

Games are starting to require 3 GB, and I'd like to have a little more breathing room. ;)

Oh, and I'm rolling Win7 Home Premium now...Need to upgrade my sig.

I read that people have used the X9000 with no mods but this will run hot at full bore according to KM the moderator... Not sure how the old 6831 heat pipes compare to the newer models.

I have not read where you can use the 79xx media bars on the old 6831 if you go the MB swap. This stuff is spread over many threads.

    Intel® Core?2 Extreme Processor X9000 (6M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB))

I'm using an x9000 in a 6860, and the temps never go above 65c during heavy gaming. I am using a notebook cooler though.

I also ordered a p-79 motherboard and p-78 media bar to swap into my 6860. I'll probably make a new thread once that's done.

And your heat pipes are same as the 6831? I have no idea whats been changed without looking at the part and numbers. They should be the same as both were speced for TDP for 35W CPUs. Your temps are way cooler than my t-9300 using Orthos..I was hitting 74-76C.

Yea, please post picts when done.

Orthos is really heavy on the CPU. Gaming etc is much easier on it and temps will lower accordingly. I hate to be the hater here but you have a nVidia 8800.

These cards are well nkown for the solder issue. I am not saying upgrade but don't spend alot. Also throwing more heatt into the case may be the straw that broke the camels back with the video card. I only post this info for users to be aware and cautious as need be...............

Actually, I found IntelBurnTest even worse ;) Com'n man boil that paste out :)

My comments were to using a killer CPU in the old 6831 as reported by site Mods. Comments like that my x9100 only hit 65C in games is not helpful to people stuffing these things into the 6831. If a new guy was to run Orthos or something causes your CPU to go hard over, things could get interesting?

Yea, the 8800 is well known to come unglued..like a few 9800's and certainly like my old 7900GS.

Back to the OP's quest for info, the 6831 is old and has the 8800 as Tanware pointed out. So the point of cost over performace comes down to just how cheap we can get these updated items; as I already pointed out and the cheap fast CPU may be the best bet.

Between the various models the questions of how well or is it possible to do board swaps, media bar differences, heat pipes, ram, x9100, x9000, gx9200, BIOS and $ comes into play.

LOL, I guess it's all easy when you know how and you have at most $200 to lose if that alibaba part turned out a lemon. This is what i need a $200 FX Turbo kit with know good parts! Right.

I'm still looking at 300 or so posts for the day my FX does go. I quit OC over a year ago and do not stress the GPU to get some more time out of her.

..and for games, my T-9300 hardly ever goes over 55C ;)

I picked up a T9300 for $65 shipped off of evilBay. We'll see how it goes. It seemed like a pretty safe bet. I also got 4 GB RAM of PC6400 RAM at Fry's for $50, and a tube of thermal paste for $10. I'm $125 deep into it, and I'm O.K. with that. I've had the laptop for what...4 years next month? I've gamed (Mass Effect 1 and 2, Fallout, Crysis, SW:TOR, Portal 1 and 2, Half-Life 2, etc) thrown it into and out of bags, dropped it at least once, spilled coffee on it at least once, and the thing is still going strong. The video card gets hot, but when I game, I try to do it on a hard surface, and I maybe game for 2 hours at a time. That's about the limit of my attention span. It's not a concious effort to keep the card's life up, it's just about what I can do at a time. I also keep it clean. I take the doors off the bottom and blow it out once every few months. This thing has honestly taken one helluva beating, and it keeps going without problem (O.K...The original HDD failed...So I bought a bigger one)...

Not bad, I paid big bucks for the 9300 almost 3 years ago. I was sort of hoping you would stuff a x9000 in there... if you found one cheap
