Hey, I'm upgrading the processor in my brand new 6860, and I'm interested in going with the 9300 from Intel here at newegg:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111001

First off, this is 100% compatible right? Also. will I have to worry about heat issues being that this is a hungrier chip? How about power consumption?

    Thanks for the input

Can you download CPU-z and post a screenshot here? The only way it will fit and work is:

    1. it is the same socket as your current CPU
    2. it is the same, or lower voltage than your current CPU (shouldn't be a problem)
    3. your BIOS will recognize the penryn CPU

Yes it will work, it is faster but uses newer tech that is more efficient so it will produce less heat and require less power

great news, I'm ordering it right now. Is there a processor upgrade guide for this particular laptop by any chance? I've seated many chips before, just curious if there is anything i need to know. I'll be using Artic Silver 5, left over from the desktop.

read somewhere that a CPU upgrade/swap will void your warranty

yeah, but there's no sticker to break when you upgrade, I would assume as long as you hold on to the older processor and put it back in when service is needed, all should be fine.

The "unofficial Gateway P series Lounge" sticky at the top of the Gateway section has lots of guides.

    it's real easy.
1: 6 screws on the back
2: 5 screws to remove cpu

    repeat to install.
    done.
    all in 25 minutes.
6 minutes to actually change it and the other 19 minutes to look at how easy it was and be a little noisy....looking at the ram and wireless card. and trying to see what you can put in the empty slot next to it. *LOL*

Don't you need to put AS5 on it, or some other thermal compound?

well, my T9300 will be here tomorrow, time for some added speed!

I can't get over how great this laptop is for the money. $1550 total after the processor upgrade, and this thing will easily hang with laptops that are considerably more expensive. I've heard many people comment on the quality on other lappy boards, but I think it's excellent. I had an Alienware briefly, the m9750, and while the build was tight, this feels like a very well lappy, not to mention, the 8800GTS is crushing the SLI 8700's I had in the m9750, and for much cheaper..

Use a Phillips #1 screwdriver so you don't strip the Case/CPU screws.

Wow, johnksss, a X9000? Damn! That's some serious power. I see you've overclocked it. Do you think i'll get around 9000 in 3dmark with the T9300? or maybe close?

Shouldn't you use Arctic Ceramique or another non-conductive thermal compound since the CPU dies are exposed on P Socket CPU's

hummm, all i have seen people use is arctic silver 5. even the people at the store say to use arctic silver 5. and i even think it cost more (speculation)

not sure what results ceramique would do.

both, it's all about the temps, if it starts running too hot, which I'm sure the 45nm are better at controlling than the 65nm, than i'll back off. I know some people that could care less if it runs a bit hot(within range), heat bothers me so I'll most likely run stock unless I want to do some benchies and certain games.

hmmm..I don't know, I have two tubes of AC5 from when I built my desktop a few months back. Isn't the heatsink right on top of the die? They're exposed?

not sure that's the right way to put that cyclist14, but i did see a few places where they say to use:
    mx2
    stg1
    Ceramique
    as5
    3m thermal tape
    Shin Etsu X23

they say mx2 and stg lower the temps better than as5

i might have to go find some stg1 and test that theory, but regular gaming with no over clocking...as5 should be fine. heck...i push mine to the extreme and it's still cool at 71c

well, I just installed my T9300, I put AS5 on the die plate, and the heat spreader covers it nicely, not to mention the installation was painless. My temps are 10 to 15 degrees cooler than before and it's blazingly fast, blazingly. I'm running at 34 degree celcius on both cores right now.

I'm gonna run Prime95 tonight to check it's integrity. So far, this was a great choice.

See, i just can't seem to get off the fence on this one. I mean, the primary reason I got this laptop is for gaming (right now, COD4 mostly). I am getting around 70-80 fps on the highest settings. I have a desktop for most of my chores (encoding, etc.).
I remember with my last laptop, an Inspiron 9300 with a 7900go, I spent $300 or so on the t2400 or whatever and ended up sort of regretting it. I mean, this lappy only cost me $1130 (bought 1 week old and it has the t5550) and to spend almost 25% of the original price for a cpu upgrade that won't make THAT much of a difference just seems unjustifiable... basically, I'm trying to talk myself out of it! lol

    hummm lets see.
1130.00 and original price is 1349.99

looks like your floating $215 bucks

well..... put another $100 to that and get your self a t9300. and you have a better than average laptop for under $1500.00. then go show your friends... you know the ones...that spent well over 2k and up. lol

Don't forget the tax on the $1349! That must cover the other $100. Now if only my wife would see it this way...

I just tried changing the cpu and when I go to move the clip that holds the cpu down to the right, it wont go all the way now. When I tried to start the pc, it would only start up for a moment. I think its because I cant move it all the way to the right. Any ideas?

I'd pull the CPU and try to reinstall it maybe it didn't seat correctly, and with the CPU out I'd mess with the clip and make sure its moving, it really doesn't move very far, counterclockwise to uninstall clockwise to lock down CPU.

There is no clip that slides over and holds the cpu down. My version has a screw that when you turn it a quarter of a turn clockwise, the whole cpu slides over a couple of millimeters. The screw wont turn with the CPU in. With the CPU out, everything slides fine. I tried it with the old CPU and it wont even go in now. Any help would be appreciated.
