    1) ceramic would do fine. it is still a pretty good solution. AS5 is not always the best solution (much like a barrel roll for those of you who have seen that demotivator)

    2) the people in the store say to use it? Bast Buy? that is not the kind of endorsement I would follow...

    lol

ty for the info on upgrading the CPU guys.

not sure that's the right way to put that cyclist14, but i did see a few places where they say to use:
    mx2
    stg1
    Ceramique
    as5
    3m thermal tape
    Shin Etsu X23

they say mx2 and stg lower the temps better than as5

i might have to go find some stg1 and test that theory, but regular gaming with no over clocking...as5 should be fine. heck...i push mine to the extreme and it's still cool at 71c

In a laptop you should always use AC5 instead of as5. As5 is conductive and shouldn't be used on these lappys.

is there something on the Artic Silver website saying this? I'm getting a bit nervous. I applied AS5, and my temps are excellent, but I'm guessing this has something to do with conductivity?

I just used AS5 on my desktop with my E8400, and it works just fine. Maybe on laptops because the chip is exposed you use chromatic? If you are not having problems don't worry, after a week or so the AS5 will be dried and set.

There is nothing exposed on any of the CPUs we would use. The core is insulated and safe; the only worry about AS5 is when there are bare transistors on the top. In this case, there are none, so it is perfectly safe.

yeah, i used as5 as well and all is well. and been stress testing my system and still the temps are cool. eventually i'll get around to trying one of these:
    mx2
    stg1
    Ceramique
    3m thermal tape
    Shin Etsu X23

but like they say....if it ain't broke.... don't fix it.

I'll throw my hand into the ring as well. I just upgraded my processor in my P-6860FX to a T9300, installed with AS5. Some observations...couldn't have been easier to install, the 9300 litterally just dropped in, the hardest part was cleaning the old compound on the heat sink (with alcohol) and spreading on the AS5, or maybe it was the time taken to loosen/tighten the panel screws, not really sure :D.

Anyway, I don't have any benchmark software but across the board all MSO applications opened faster with little to no lag in startup. Boot is about 35 seconds faster. My Experience index is 5.1 (don't know why I didn't get 5.0 like you did Johnksss, but I am not complaining).

Crysis runs SIGNIFICANTLY smoother (all medium settings), GPU fan didn't turn on until about 45 min into game play, in the past it started within 15 min. Don't know if that is related to overall heat generated by the computer (CPU/GPU, HD, etc.), but the computer clearly runs cooler. I will run HWMonitor later this evening, as well as upping settings on Crysis.

    Cheers.

John..what settings are you running on Crysis? Other than your x9000 and my t9300, the only other difference I have is a 320GB Raid 0...

    Cheers!

that pretty much sums up my experience as well. I love this laptop. Been using this a ton more than my gaming desktop, kinda feel guilty about it too :p
