I don't know much about the subject, but from this website it looks like you CAN upgrade to PC2-5300

    http://www.ramcity.com.au/system/41930.htm

"RamCity guarantees 100% that all modules below are compatible with the Gateway MX6960 Notebook

    Kingston 1GB 200-pin SO-DIMM
    Speed: DDR2-667 / PC2-5300
    Part No: M12864F50"

you should research it more and get a second opinion before buying

Above is a specs list of your laptop/\
    "1024 MB 533 Mhz DDR2 memory (2 × 512 MB)
    Total slots: 2 DDR2 slots | Available slots: 0 DDR2 slots"
You have 2 slots for memory. Both have a 512MB stick totaling 1GB.
The memory type is ddr2 533Mhz. So you should go for 2GB which will be just right for you. So you can buy any type of ddr2 memory. It doesn't have to be 533MHz, getting 667MHz would be a better idea because its more popular and now days ddr2 ram is very inexpensive.
Ok so you can get either 2x1Gb sticks or 1x2Gb stick. I recommend 2x1GB sticks.
