Okay. Right now, I have my external mouse, monitor and keyboard connected to my 7811. I have turned off the built-in monitor, and closed the lid. The laptop is sitting on my pull out keyboard tray. Is this safe? It has 4 or 5 inches of clearance on either side. I think the cooling is fine, maybe just worried about the monitor/inside overheating...

    Thoughts?

Would be running this like 10+ hours today and weekends, 7 or so on weekdays. Should I also remove the battery?

Should be okay as far as longevity... I would recommend leaving the screen open if at all possible (even just an inch or so), just due to the fact that heat rises and the area around the touchpad tends to get quite warm... wouldn't want that on my screen.

Alright... thanks for the suggestion. Opened it up about 1 and a quarter inches.

No problem, I'd also monitor the temps for the first couple days just to make sure everything is in order. If you don't have a monitoring program use HWMonitor, it works great.

Okay. What would be the temperatures when I might want to start worrying?

Generally, if your graphics card is going over 80C, CPU over 70C and HDD over 55C you should start to worry.

Alright... will keep a look out and report back if it gets to hot, so others don't make the same mistake.

Okay. After playing some Dawn of War 2, HDD stays at 53.
GPU hovers around 85, spikes to 87, 30 seconds after turning game off, its at 67. CPU doesn't pass 55. Opening and closing lid does nothing for heat. Have tray pulled out, letting laptop cool down.

Final verdict : don't try this at home, folks. Big risks.

Why not open the monitor and use a dual screen setup?

I agree closing the lid is not a good idea. But if you are happy with the temps who can argue?

I was running dual-monitor, was just seeing if I could do this. Clean up the desk a bit, more simple, takes up less space.

Wouldn't that put more stress on the GPU since it has to display on 2 screens?

It does. Sometimes FPS would drop, have to disconnect.

Noob question but how do you do this? Just through power management?

    Thanks in advance :p

Go into your nvidia cp, and it should say set up multiple displays. Uncheck the Notebook Montior.
