Does anyone here not use this as an actual desktop replacement, but what a laptop is supposed to be for, portability? I never had this thing in my hands, I can imagine it being quite large. I just really like it because I am a gamer. I know that I wont get much life out of the battery alone...
-
Mostly as a desktop replacement but it's not terribly heavy for me. I would summarize it best by saying...
1.) Good for moving around the house.
2.) Good for consultants/business folks moving for the day.
3.) Not good for college kids wanting to move from class to class. -
Mine is DTR all the way. About the only way it would leave the home is if I were to stay in a hotel for an extended time, have to be able to play games.
battery life is good for surfing and light tasks, around 3.5 hours. My Mini 9 gets about 2 hours more on battery but it can't do what the Gateway does either. -
Do you guys think it would be good if I am going to a friends house to play some TF2? Or maybe just bringing it to the living room to watch TV while using the laptop? Or does it's heaviness/bulkiness hinder it's ability to be portable? Thanks. Also, like the answers so far, thanks for the swift replies

I mostly agree with hax0rJimDuggan.
Taking it to a friends house or moving it to another room shouldn't be a problem, in my opinion.
Lugging it around for a few hours at an airport would be less fun, nor would carrying it around all day at school. -

I have the MSI wind for my on the go daily hassles, like notes, team projects and etc. the FX is way too flashy and bulky to be used in those situations

i take mine to college every day...just get a good bag to carry it in
Good times -
I carry mine everywhere I go (college classes, work, church haha....). I don't use it as a DTR as I have more capable desktop. I got primarily due to the 1920x1200 resolution and performance - a little gaming on the go if I wished since I'm not home 90% of the time.
I don't find it heavy at all...then again I'm usually carrying 25+ lbs of books and folders so another 10+ lbs is nothing to me (and I'm 130 lbs). -
I actually use my 7805u for the same things I do my 15.4" 6864 FX, portability. I'm not a gamer at all, but I wanted this rig because of the power and because I like to play round with digital pics a lot.
I even brought my 7805 AND my work machine, a 14" Dell, to Chicago a couple weeks ago for a business trip. I brought both because I had to hand in my work machine to IT to have all the software updated and I didn't want to be without a computer all week. I don't find the weight of the 7805 too bad at all while carrying it around in the Targus City Gear backpack I bought for it. It was, however, pretty heavy with TWO laptops and TWO power adapters walking through the airport. I'd do it again though.
I mainly use the laptops for use around the house, to use on my boat in the summer and to bring with me anywhere I want or need to have a computer.

I work out of town, and it comes with me everywhere. I bought a slappa backpack to carry it, and that helps with the portability. I dont mind the size/weight because it has the features that i want.

I lug the thing around in a messenger back on my bike, it builds character!

I use my 7805 daily for school and work. It isn't heavy by itself at all but when you add in all the components you need (Targus bag, MX Revo Mouse, Ratz Pad, Kensington Power Supply, somtimes an external drive) it starts to add up. I'm already carrying 15-25 lbs of books thanks to my classes (dont recommend taking microbiology, physiology and statistics all in one semester) then you really start to feel it. I feel it most when I have to sprint from one end of campus to the other. My arm fills with lactid acid when I really have to move fast and lug the thing around. I'm not exactly weak either because I weight lift on a daily basis.
It's definitely portable but it's not recommended for people who are easily inconvenienced. I don't mind at all because I'm used to juggling a skateboard and a couple hundred pounds of books already lol.
As for using it during school/work. It really grabs everyones attention when you whip this gigantic monster out of the bag and power it up. It's got its negatives and its positives. One of the negatives is that nosy people can easily eaves drop on what you are doing...from like 15 feet away. I don't like playing games in the library or in lab because it attracts the weirdest people who somehow feel compelled to give me advice on what the best games are and want to try out my games. -
Personally, I don't plan on lugging this behemoth around much other than to the occasional work meeting or when I'm on vacation to a hotel room or friends house back home. I'm leery to lug it around in public in part because the giant laptop attache bag says steal me loud and clear. Makes me think I should get a netbook even though I shouldnt, if you know what i mean. -

2 Bottles of water.
Logitech G5 Mouse and its little weights.
Mouse pad.
Power supply.
Psp's carrying case (with all my psp stuff in it).
All my manuals for the notebook/mouse/psp/software I have/etc.
DVDs/CDs
Notebooks/books.
Pens/pencils/markers.
Fitness bands (Workout alot and they come in handy if can't be at home to)
The P-7805u (of course)
Wallet.
Cell phone.
Basically I carry a thief's dream lol
Anyway, I find no problem carrying that around in the backpack.

I take my 7811 with me to classes all the time. Sure, it's not light, but carrying around a giant laptop builds character.
-
Though I'd even settle for a good price 14.1 inch if the price was right.. -
Its about 1-2 lbs more than a Dell 17" and only 3 lbs more than a Dell 15" - but it packs way more power than both of 'em
I carry mine with me everywhere, especially school. The primary reason for me getting this is so I could dev at school (I code in UnrealScript for Unreal Engine 3) on my school laptop instead of having to come home to do it on my desktop. This thing chews through UE3.
That being said, I barely feel my backpack (I have a very good one from Targus). The laptop fits perfectly, its well-padded, and it distributes weight nicely. I walk around with it all day and don't notice or ever think about it. -
