I cant say i've had this problem till after i started to OC my card.. I have a 7801u 9800gts.. I have it oc'd to 710/910/1720.....and my drivers are 176.15.. newest thing I can get from Gateways driver guide.. and I dont really know how to update them the other way..

But any game will run fine For a good while and all of a sudden fraps just drop to 5-10 fps.. and I pretty much have to restart the computer for it fix..

    any suggestions?

This happened to me a while ago. The cause for it is improperly installed drivers. Try using Dox drivers.

go here and select the correct operating system drivers to download. after downloading them, you'll want to go to your device manager, click on display adapter, right click on the video card and choose uninstall (a window will pop up asking if you want to delete the driver software for this device, check the box) after uninstalling, reboot the laptop, and install the downloaded drivers.

Are you sure those drivers you linked me to are for my 9800M GTS? because all the drivers i've tried to download from laptop2go wont work.. it doesnt support my video card... and I really dont want to uninstall my drivers and then cant install newer ones if they wont work.. ive done that before on my old 6860 and had a hell of a time to get them fixed...

Do some Googling for "Video driver has stop responding and has been recovered" and you'll get a ton of results. It seems to be a problem with Vista and Nvidia. Simply changing drivers won't always fix the problem. I also get the same video driver problem, although it only tends to happen when I'm under battery power.

those drives cover the recent laptop video cards, including your 9800GTS. if you are having trouble installing video drivers, look up at the top of the page for the 'Definitive nVidia driver upgrade guide'
