So I tried to update my drivers to 174.74. I uninstalled the old ones, ran drive sweeper. I downloaded 174.74 vista 64 version and the modified inf. Put the inf in the folder and i used the have disk method to install the driver.

It then comes up and says "This driver selected does not support Windows Vista"

Anyone know what is going on. I even tried 174.70 and it wont work. I have the fx p6831.

Here is the step you need to do when reinstalling video drivers.

1- Uninstall NVIDA drivers from "Control Panel\Programs and Features"
2- Reboot in SAFE MODE (press F8 while rebooting)
3- Run drive sweeper in safe mode
    4- Reboot in normal mode
    5- Install your new driver
    6- Reboot in normal mode

    Thats it

Hmm. Is that a 64-bit thing? I never have to do steps 1-4. I simply download the driver, replace the .inf, and run the setup.exe. It installs it, and prompts me to reboot.

That is not the good way to install drivers because of old driver files that remain on the HD. You may have problems because of this.. Maybe not in games but you will have in the Nvidia interface.

Did not work. I ran drive sweeper in safe mode. Then rebooted in normal and ran the setup for 174.74. It took a long time so i though it was going to work. Then it rebooted but nothing happened.

Well nothing has worked. I had to system restore. It works fine now but im angry i wont be able to update drivers anymore without reformatting. I am using sp1 so that might be a cause.

same thing here, I couldnt install 174.74 or 70 neither on Vista 32bit SP1...only 174.60 which gave me -150 points in 3dmark06 than the Gateway driver...so I puted back the Gateway driver. :(

I installed these drivers lastnight and they work fine for me. I did not use the modified .inf file. I found with these newer drivers that when you try to use the modified .inf file it will not install. I just downloaded the drivers and install them by clicking on the setup file and they installed fine on my system.I have not ran 3D Mark06 to see if my score increases or decreases but my games play excellent with these drivers PREY, F.E.A.R and my favorite sports games look excellent with these drivers. ;)

Nope - nothing to do with SP1 - I know, as I was fighting with it well before its release..

what he said. for 174.xx+ .....you can't use the modified INF.

    1. Uninstall drivers from the device manager.
    2. Restart computer, VGA drivers should automatically install.
    3. right click on the video adapter in device manager and click update driver.
    4. click browse computer for driver and find the folder with your driver in it.
that's how I did it and it worked perfectly.

Just a thought to this forums mod, or some one who has better grammer than I, - the issue of drivers on the 6831FX seems to come up quite a bit. It may be a good thing to compile the 'DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO THE VIDEO DRIVER - P6831FX Edition" and sticky it.

I second this! Multiple times I have trouble lol. Also maybe add a note as to which are most stable/widely used.
