    Hello,

I have a Gateway NE71B series laptop. A virus wiped out the recovery partition, I hired a tech to retrieve my files, but now I have to format the drive and re-install Win 8 (which was pre-installed from the factory).

Gateway says I have to purchase a recovery CD. I want to try to find a free download, ie: utorrent, etc. I don't have a blank CD/DVD and can't afford to buy any right now. My question is this... If I'm able to find said download, is it possible to use a USB HDD as a recovery disk?

You should be able to, if the download is in .iso format, you can use something like unetbootin to create a bootable USB HDD.

You probably would have better chance of getting it to work with CD/DVD though.
