Now I would have searched the forums for this answer (it has to be here, right?) but I didn't see the search option anywhere.
I just installed Vista 64-bit on this wonderful laptop just to test the true gaming potential and the IDT\Sigmatel audio driver is rather grumpy. After the initial install sound worked fine but there was 1 unknown device, the hi-def audio device. Sound section of device manager ID's generic device but not the IDT\Sigmatel audio device.
I've searched google for it, tried several drivers out there but still not finding anything. the 32-bit driver from gateway.com doesn't install (I didn't think it would since x64 is picky about drivers), and a bunch of others in the wild either break sound altogether or just don't work.
Nothing on gateway for the 6860FX as far as driver downloads - when I can get them without a serial number it will be fine but I know many of you have Vista x64 installed, what drivers did you use.
So far I've covered about everything, Intel chipset, Intel wireless, Realtek ethernet, Realtek card reader, widcomm Bluetooth, Synaptics touchpad, but the audio (and I think the modem) are unhappy.
Thanks a ton for you insight on this!

the modem sometimes is the problem, did you install all the drivers before you let windows update? -
No I didn't. Do you suggest this?
My order of operations was - Install Vista x64, install Intel wireless driver, windows updates, and then Bitdefender for A\V.
And your right the modem isn't installed either. -
I would not redo it now, but next time install your drivers first, that way microsoft will not install some goofy driver in place of one gateway has.
