I just started having this problem recently and it seemed like nothing was working, so I basically had to do a complete to factory restore. I was doing some regular vista updates and I went to restart. I saw the BIOS and then it would hit the green load screen before you see the blue windows icon and it goes to system repair window, telling me it could take several minutes to fix because windows didn't start successfully. I am taking a wild guess and saying that this has something to do with the vista updates. Should I try and update again and see if that really is the problem or wait until Microsoft puts out a stable update for my notebook, which is the Gateway P-171S FX? Oh, and when I mean nothing works I mean nothing besides the "return to factory" restore option, not even the "restore to an earlier date". Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.

    Updates must cause this
I have lots of problems like this even on XP so I would recommend you when you format PC after installing drivers update windows as fast as you can so you can minimize thease troubles cause softwares and windows may cause conflicts and windows will crash as usual

can anyone translate this kid problem so i can try help ?

try be more clear here, first describe your system then explain the problem, what you did before it happened, what you did to fix, what happened.

learn the basic terms, other wise people will turn away, have you used the gateway repair utility did you reformat, were you running games etc.

people are here because they are willing to help, but you need to be able to communicate your problem.

    have a good day.

I thought I was pretty clear on what had happened. Let me start again then. I was running Microsoft system update, an icon on the bottom of my screen said, "updates ready to install, restart required", so I restarted my notebook. It then goes into installation, which is basically the shut down screen but shows the progress of installation. Finally when it got done installing it would start to load but never get to the windows vista icon before you see your desktop. It simple would go into the system fix program that was already installed on this notebook. It could never find a solution to the problem and no matter what I did I couldn't fix it, the only thing that did fix it was doing a factory restore. I wasn't doing anything else prior to that, I have only been using my notebook for simple web browsing, at least until school starts back. And I told you what my system was, it's a Gateway P-171S FX, I haven't done any modding to it so it is all factory, even the operating system which is Windows Vista 32bit. I am assuming all this problem amounts to is the windows update and was hoping someone had the same problem as I am having now. And if you can't understand that then I don't know what else to say.

    I don't know exactly what to tell you but this;
Do you manually do the windows updates or do you have the auto update turned on?
If you do it manually one thing to realize is that sp 1 still has some problems with certain periferals/drivers. It is supposed to to a scan of your system to see if you have any of these periferals/drivers that are on the problem list. But, if you do the updates yourself it doesn't do the scan. When you get the updates automattically it gives you the option to only get the imperitive updates (thats your best option) or all updates. it (theoretically) shouldn't giive you any of the updates that are on your problem list (theoretically). But unfortunately I have seen stories of people recieving these updates, that they should not have gotten and it causing (as you are experiencing) big problems.
Did you try to start up in safe mode?
If you can get into safe mode uninstall the updates.

good call i had my system crashing after installing one of the windows update packs, optional one.

when your machine is booting press f8
that will allow you use safe mode with network (so you can read this online if you need )
go to into control panel / programs and features
on the left panel you can chose installed updates, remove the one you suspect or all.

next change windows update to only inform you of updates but not download or install automatically.
control panel / windows update / settings / the middle radio button
can remove the include recommended updates if you like.

boot into windows normally (hope it works).
if you do get a windows update notice install only the important ones, not the recommended or optional.

    report back,

    hope it will help

Thank you all for all the advice. I have already done a factory restore, the reason I am typing as we speak, so I think what I am going to do is start reinstalling all updates one at a time, lengthy process I know. That way I can see which one is causing the problem. Again thank you.

do not do driver updates unless you really have too...more than likely...it was a driver crash..... right before you do the drivers them selves..do a system check point. then install drivers one at a time....

Actually the thing that was making windows crash was the last update I had installed. After another attempt to install the same update, can't remember the name but I think it is a hotfix update, my system did the same thing so I will have to contact Microsoft to see what's the deal.
