    WD Passport Portable on Gateway Laptop

    Hey I notice that some laptops need a extra power source for using the WD Passport portable hardrive, Does the Gateway 7811 FX need extra power to power up this external harddrive?

    I can't speak for that specific drive but I have an external 100Gig 2.5. The left two usb ports will not on their own power the drive. The one on the right will, but this is only on the AC addapter................

    This is on a P7805u................

    got the WD passport elite 320gb from costco. You do not need any external power source, just usb. plug and done.

    I have a fx 7811

    I have a passport that powers off the left ports. Can't remember if I need 2 ports with Y cable, maybe. Been awhile since I used it. The left ports have more power if I remember correctly. If you get larger than 320 I think they all need additional power.
