I canceled my order with gateway and have been trying to get as much money as I can to go and pick up the P6831 FX from best buy (when the fix the frickin price that is)

The reason I wanna go with the best buy one is because I pretty much plan on Turning it into a Penryn with A 1710 WUXGA I'd also like to pick up 2 7200 RPM drives and Raid 0 them. I could probably get away with doing most of that for less than 2k total (which would be an insain laptop for that price)

I'm just wandering who else is waiting for the best buy price to go back down? and do you plan on messing with the laptop as well?

I would rather go with the P-171S FX and get a rep at gateway to bring the price down. That would bring it around the P6831 FX range so I can get the slot load DVD player =) Plus in the mean time...before I decide to, if I do upgrade the processor I have a better one =)

Yeah but with some of the power issues i've been reading about A penryn may be just what this laptop needs. I don't really like the LCD since it seems to be a bit washed out (the ones i've seen though) And maybe toss in another HDD for A raid =D with all of that you'd probably be right around 2k, and that'd be one smoking laptop

The cheapest you can get a sager with an 8800 (bar its an 8800 GTX with more shaders) is 2144.00 and thats still with a WSXGA an 80GB HDD, and 1GB of ram

Ya...I'm hoping BB drops their prices soon as well. This was starting to become a nice community as people bought the machines. With dual 7200 hds in Raid 0 and a T9300...I love this laptop :)

Christmas - any idea on how hard the LCD swap would be? I love my laptop, but man does it deserve a WUXGA. Is there a service manual out there?

I disassembled a Dell Latitude laptop and I do not recommend doing an LCD swap because you actually need an LCD from the same manufacturer as they have different hinge thickness, bezel sizes, and placement.

On top of that, you have to almost completely disassemble the laptop in order to remove the hinge, which is a little painful because the LCD comes with this metallic connector tape which may also vary between manufacturers.

You're better off just buying the better model that has WUXGA.

    EDIT: Like the 171X-FX

I am comfortable taking apart laptops (assuming i have the guide), as i have taken my 9300 all the way down to parts (including changing the LCD's plastic); but you are potentially right about the LCD's being wrong - thus me asking about it..

when I built my projectors (my most recent one based off of a 15.4 style) i've noticed that Laptop screens generally use the same connections etc etc.

Now this in no way means every single 17" WUXGA is going to work in this thing, but I would gather most would, since your just taking out the screen, and not messing with the lid. I would wager an XPS (say 1710 screen) would probably work in this thing. now that doesn't mean go out and do it, but its something I'm going to try on mine when I purchase it.

You can purchase A complete WUXGA for about 220 which isn't a bad price but I think someones already done A WUXGA swap on one.
