I'm just wondering if there's a better software recording solution for the built-in webcam. The stock program saves video recordings as .avi's.. HUGE .avi's.. and while I'm not necessarily starving for space, 1 GB+ for a two-minute recording at 480p is embarrassingly excessive. What do you guys use, or do you not use the built-in webcam at all and just rely on external ones? Thanks. :)

I use Yawcam. It has some features like motion detection that the OEM software doesn't have. And it is free also. However, it will not do vids. Only JPG, GIF and PNG.
But it will stream video. Yawcam uses MJPEG as compression.

    Tested on P7805u, Win 7 64

Thank you for the replies. :)

The Chicony program is what's giving me the huge .avi files. I can get smaller files at the lowest resolution, but it looks really, really bad.

Yawcam won't do for my present need(s), as I need video recording. It has nice features, though.. I'll keep it tabbed.

I'll look at Cyberlink and Webcam Max. I'd prefer freeware, but if one or the other are exceptionally good, I'll think about it.

Anyway, thank you all again. :)

What is the newest Gateway Chicony USB 2.0 Camera driver. I have 6.2.251.627: However, it is dated 6/27/2008. I found higher #'ed driver but, they have an older date..

The problem with most web cam software is for compression it has to rely on the CPU. So for real time high compression video our CPU's would be highly stressed.

    Maybe something Cuda Powered.
