I have to boot twice in order to activate any program.....

I hit start button, wait till computer boots up then click on a program icon and I get the hour glass forever. Hard drive light is on and does not stop.

I cannot do a ctrl/alt del as there is no response from keyboard while hour glass is displayed.

I then hold the start button down till computer shuts down then I restart a second time. This time all is OK.

What could be causing that problem?

    Here's what I have tried.
    1. Complete virus scan with AVG
    2. Boot to cmd prompt and do a chkdsk/f

Checking Google for this problem and found a couple of suggestions to do a format and reload Vista. I really don't want to do that if I can help it.

Best possible way for a long term fix is a reinstall. Try Live CD OS like Ubuntu to see if you can access the hard drive without any problem. Try doing that a few times to make sure ur hard disk is fine. If that runs fine then you might have to reinstall Vista for a clean/permanent fix.
