What Brand and kind of ram did you buy to upgrade your P6831? I know this laptop supports DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300), but does it support 4 timeing instead of 5? Which brands have worked so far?

I just used DDR2 PC5300 667 RAM (G Skill) to upgrade my memory. I believe the computer can also use the PC5400 memory as well as the PC 6400 memory but it will downclock to the to 667 speed as it will not run at the 800 speed due to hardware restrictions (motherboard). I believe the Bios is locked on this model as well no way to make any changes in the settings except for basic things. But I like Kingston memory it is just my personal preference I am sure there are other brands that will work fine also.

you're running x64 OS right? Vista or XP ?
JGEM Yes I am running 64bit Vista home Premium. -
Yes when I upgraded the processor the Intel Processor ID Utility shows that the processor is running at 800fsb. However when I researched the motherboard documentation on Gateway's website it said that the maximum memory speed supported is 667. I also read here on this forum that the Bios is locked for this laptop and the advanced settings such as timing, etc cannot be modified. -
I found this, and it has 800 MHz Front Side Bus support, but the memory is still the same. I heard that they won't change it, and the santa rosa refresh will be replaced with the Cantiga chipsets come out in Q 2008 supposedly which would support DDR2-667/800 or DDR3-800/1066.

Thanks for putting that link in your post that is similar information to what I read on the forums that the frontside bus is 800MHz but the maximum memory speed supported is 667MHZ. I heard that the 800MHZ memory would work but it will only run at 667MHZ. -
First off i dont know why you want to upgrade the memory 3 gigs is plenty for right now.
You can use any memory that's DDR2 and it will work. The FSB is quad pump and runs at 800mhz, so divide that by 4 is 200mhz efective that means that your memory only needs to run at that speed. But with DDR doubles the memory speed. So DDR400 actually runs at 800mhz when using two sticks. 533, 667 and 800 will all work and the bios will downclock the memory to 400mhz. The plus in this is that if you can get into the bios memory timings might be lower since is running at a slower speed.
Our stock memory of 667 is actually desing to run with proccessors with a 1066 FSB.
