They were the best deal out there and Gateway seemed to be pushing them but then the 79-series got discontinued quickly and disappeared.

Any rumors on new models coming out or has Gateway given up?

Weren't the ODM for the FX series Acer?

I really liked the FX price/performance two years ago, but will never miss soldered on, no access, GPU's or Gateway support.

This is a tough market for a new mid range game machine! There are no real screen niches to fill, the CPU's and chipset are of no real gain for gamers, nor unfortunately are the GPU's. There just is no real pressing need to upgrade, especially for gaming, your present FX machine or about most any other prior generation mid range gaming machine out there.

Even going from the P78xx to P79xx was no real jump and I think GW felt this in low sales. The economy does not help either trying to push a low end machine to a high end one etc……….

Sadly it doesn't seem as though the FX series has gotten the proper refresh, seeing as though they haven't even jumped into i5/i7 territory yet.

If you're looking for an alternative from Acer, might I suggest the 5745G, the 7745G or the 8943G, all with 15'', 17'', and 18.4'' screens respectively. The 5745G and 7745G come with a nVidia GT330 and the 8943G has a Radeon (forget which one). All three have an i7 flavor.

Wistron was the ODM for the FX series; Acer is just the parent company of Gateway.

Is it time to say R.I.P. to the FX laptop lineup?

It's not time to say R.I.P. yet. Just because they aren't being born doesn't mean they aren't still around and kickin'!
