What is the best cooler for the 7805u?

I hear mixed reviews for the Cryo LX. Apparently the Zalman Nc2000 cools the anterior inferior part of the notebook while the Cryo LX coolers the posterior. From what I read, my 7805u houses the GPU and CPU in the back, so logically I should get the Cryo. Things that worry me about the Cyro:
    1. I hear the Cryo on average only drops the temps 3 degrees(GPU and CPU) on the 7805u. Apparently that isn't very much .
    2. Someone told me the Cryo sucks air from the bottom of the laptop instead of blowing it up, is that true?
    3. How portable is the Cryo LX? I've seen video reviews but I can't get a good sense of how big it is. I want to know if I can fit it in a 17 inch notebook carrier along with my 7805u.

Couldn't I just buy the Zalman and reverse it? I hear much better reviews about the nc2000 than I do about the cryo lx.

Btw, for the people who own the 7805u, did yours come with a vista cd? I recently exchanged mine because of a faulty Ac adapter and mine didn't come with a vista cd. I don't remember if my original one came with one or not. Thanks!

Also, I would be grateful if someone could recommend me a good 17 inch notebook case. I'm looking to get a better looking one lol

Thinking about ordering the Cryo LX:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997340

    and the Targus case:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834999896

Also, should I just buy a 180w targus adapter for when my new ac adapter fails? apparently gateway has been releasing lots of adapters with bad capacitors, so if you hear a whining or chirping sound, it's going to die real soon.

EDIT: 10 minutes after this post and only 20 hours after I got the new adapter it's starting to make sizzling sounds like the first one. The first one made sizzling sounds for a day or two before it started making chirping sounds and died altogether.

I have the cyro LX silver color... its a large sized cooler made of aluminum, not plastic like other competitors. The fans are also placed at strategically to cool down the back (most important areas), and not the front(like zalman). Overall its a lil pricey, but well worth the purchase. i bought it for my overheating Compal HEL 80 and will be reusing it for the FX

How portable is it? Is it big and clunky? How sturdy does it feel? My antec cooler broke in like 2 weeks because of it's poor design for the usb connector.

I have both notebook coolers (Zalman NC-2000 & NZXT Cryo LX) for my laptops (Gateway P-7811 & Dell M1730). Based on my testing, the Zalman offers superior performance for Gateway FX series notebooks. During heavy loads (gaming, etc) the Zalman NC-2000 performs 10+ degrees cooler than the NZXT. I monitored temperatures with SPEEDFAN 4.37.

Even though the NZXT notebook cooler has triple fans, the Zalman NC-2000 has a better design in terms of distributing cooler air to the GPU & CPU of my 7811. Unless you need additional USB ports, the NZXT cooler is not a right fit for Gateway FX owners, plus it's more expensive.

However, you need to turn the 7811 around while using the Zalman. This is necessary for the vents to match up with the GPU & CPU. In addition, I placed a box of staplers on the bottom to keep my Zalman levelled. Despite this minor modification, I would highly reccomend the Zalman over the NZXT. My 7811 is a lot more cooler when playing games or during general use.

The NZXT notebook cooler is now being used by my wife. She owns a Toshiba laptop.

    I too am using a 7805u....

Is a cooler really needed? I don't do that much gaming.
I only watch about a few H264 p720 videos everyday.
And maybe around 1-2 hours of light gaming everyday.

Do you think I should get a cooler? Will it extend the lifetime of my laptop?

How long do you plan to own the 7805u? These notebook coolers (in theory) will extend the life of your laptop. For most people, a notebook cooler is not needed. Do your research and determine if it's really needed for your level of use.

It also depends on your comort level with a given level of heat that's generated by your 7805u. There are some batches or builds that may suffer from overheating issues so a notebook cooler may be needed.

I think what a cooler does more than anything for these notebooks is keep the hard drives cooler. It also helps to keep so much heat from seeping up through the keyboard and palm rest. Other than that, I don't think they do much, probably do the same with raising the back and pointing a desk fan. :D

I use an external mouse and keyboard when i'm at home.
I already am using this cheap one, and I know it doesn't cool as well as the ones above. I can barely feel the air on my palm when I put my hand over it.

wow thanks a bunch that really helps out a lot. is the nc2000 angled for typing? i ask that because if you're turning it around then its going to be really uncomfortable to use. how much did you buy it for and is it more portable than the nzxt? i hear mixed reviews about the cyro and i really trust the zalman name. the fan placement is really worrying me

    Zalman NC-2000 the best one???

Well............... If you have to turn the cooler 180 degrees then the slant will force you to elevate the laptop a few inches if you want a slant towards you. Sounds kind of mickey mouse. Plus for typing raising the height of the laptop can make typing uncomfortable.

so there must be a better cooler than the zalman for the 7805U

Yes, the Zalman is angled for typing. There's rubber fittings on top of the cooler to prevent any laptop from sliding off. Depending on your style of typing, the angle may work for you. You can always adjust the angle to meet your preference. It's very comfortable to use.

The fan placement of the CRYO LX looks ideal but the design of the vents prevent adequate air flow to reach your laptop, especially compared to the Zalman NC2000.

In my opinion, the Zalman is a lot more portable due to the lighter weight. The Cryo LX has a bigger design and will take up a lot more room in your carrying case.

Since I live in Canada, I was able to purchase the Zalman for NC2000s for only $50.

There will always be a better choice for cooling any laptop (it's equivalent to finding the best deal possible for a car; there will always be a better one around the corner). If you have the $$$$ for cooling, anyone can make it happen for a price. It's all comes down to your budget, preference or level of comfort.

But when it comes to these two choices, the Zalman is still a better choice compared to the Cryo LX.

My addapter just cuts out without warning, replugging it back it restarts it. I have a new one coming but from what you say here I have little confidence in it. I have the 180w Targus I had used for my XT5000T. I can tell you it works fine. Someone else did a power monitor and under heavy gaming load I think measured 115w from the outlet.

I can say that is real close to the original bricks limit so if you plan on heavy usage or upgrades etc the 180w is a good idea.

i ended up buying the 120w kensington from this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=334196. i was going for 14.99 when i bought it and ground shipping was like 7-8 bucks but they overnighted it to me(and i guess everyeone else too lol). its small and portable and works great incase you want to get a back up for your back up. it's thickness is probably around that of an ipod and its size is not much bigger either.

so you have no problems typing despite the weird angle of the laptop? im thinking of getting the zalman and cutting off the elevated part. do you think it would be possible or would there be wires in that part?

It's not possible to cut the elevated part due to wiring and air flow issues. All you really need to do is put an elevated box or stopper on the bottom to ensure a right angle. A little discreet tape job should do the trick!

Best case scenario for me is using a Zalman NC2000 as my main base cooler such as at home or school on a desk that I commonly use.... Then when I travel I use an Antec Cooler S... inwhich both have worked out marvelously for me thus far.... and I even think the Antec Cooler S is a little more efficent in certain conditions because there is no metal blocking the air that is distributed below my FX and that the highest fan setting has higher RPM.... The elevation from both actually makes my hands feel much more comfortable for longer periods of time.....

If you ask me, I would honestly skip the Cryo, buy a NC2000 (has 1 extra usb port in addition to the one that connects into the Laptop) and a Logitech Audio Hub if you need more usb ports (3) and superior audio quality....youll thank me :)

It really depends on your uses but give it some thought...

Wouldn't that Antec cooler suck back in the heated air the CPU side blows out?

It really isnt an issue because the way that the cooler is formed, the vent that disperses the heat out is not directly even close to the 2 intakes of the antec cooler.... so no it really isnt a problem

Guys. The cooler you really want is aluminium Floston Airgear with 8-inch fan ;)

    Here's my laptop on it.

    And that's the cooler itself.

It's fully readjustable, you can use it in presentation mode.

Connects with USB cable and consumes 5W of power. Adjustable fan rotation speed - 330-440 rpm. SILENT.

Has special rubber cushion to protect laptop from scratches.

Costs just 70 bucks here and keeps my laptop SILENT and cool. I'm in folding at home team, so my laptop's gpu is in work all the time. Harly notice it ;)

As far as I see, it's not sold in States, so if you really want this arigear thing - I can check out UPS or Fedex rates for you and we can arrange everything.

Where can I find a NZXT Cryo LX at a cheap price, and is it as good as a Zalman ZM-NC2000. I have looked at both, they both look like they are very close as far as specs.

IMHO the NC2000 would be the overall better buy... as ive stated before I own one and they are fantastic....I just did a quick search and for the most part, when you include shipping costs to the base price the differences are negligible... so if you decide on the Zalman I would just go ahead and get it from newegg

Got the NZXT CRYO from Amazon for 70 bucks 2 weeks ago. I will be returning it 'cause I did not see major difference in temp drops - 2-3 C at most in the GPU. I am tempted to get the zalman nc2000....but read somewhere that the drop is non-existant. Not sure If I should wait.

Nevertheless, once you get it, post a review. I will like to confirm that it drops more than 7C.

it sounds like the ZALMAN Notebook Cooler Model ZM-NC2000 would be my best choice for the P-7805u?

I think the best cooler is to customize one yourself.

I returned the Cryo 'cause of lack of temp drop. I will be waiting for some of you guys to take the plunge and buy the NC2000 and report back...don't want to throw 70 bucks away

dont have hard data yet, just got this baby done..but heres what i did..i bought

    http://www.amazon.com/Rolodex-82410-Laptop-Stand/dp/B000JE7CMG/ref=pd_sbs_op_2

    and put

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2248797&CatId=802 X2,

cut out the mesh with wiresnips and use small bolts to secure the fans under where the intake fan is. Wire them to a USB plug and tape it up with some electrical tape..on my old hp it would drop at least 10c, dont know on my Gateway yet but I will let you know.. Ill type up instructions and post pictures as the process goes.

I use this thing right here:

    http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?C=1135&ID=1599

Believe it or not, it actually works great. I've used it on my (current) 7805u, my older M-6750, and on my little Asus eee 701. While I guarantee that it won't cool as good as an fan blowing on the bottom of the laptop, it makes a noticeable difference in the temp of the laptops I've used it with. As anyone with an eee pc can tell you, the keyboard gets really warm (and sometimes hot) since it uses the base of the keyboard as a heatsink. Put the little guy on this mat, and it makes a noticeable difference in the heat you feel through the keyboard.

Another happy Zalman NC-2000 owner here. Compared to other coolers, this one actually did a much better job with its "air cushion" it slowly creates, rather than blasting a bunch of air towards the intake vents. The nice thing about the Zalman is that you don't have to have the notebook's vents directly over the holes: It literally creates a cool cushion so that any upward-drafting notebook would cool sufficiently.

It's portable, light, sleek, and will provide an extra USB port, although a miniscule amount of lag will irritate the most hardcore users...I personally plug my VX Revo into the spare port and notice no lag during gaming.

What would you guys recommend for me? I've got a 7811, which is almost identical to the 7805u. For general use, my crappy Targus cooling pad doesn't really do anything, but when gaming, it does lower temps a little bit. What sucks about it is it's too small, and fan placement is poor. I have to shift the whole computer around on the pad if I want to cool a certain area. The only 2 things that really get hot are the GPU and the hard drive. I'd love a cooler that cools the GPU well.

So anyway, I don't really care about the fan noise. It could sound like a jet taking off for all I care, as long as it does its job. I also won't pay over 50 bucks for a fan encased in some plastic (or metal). Any suggestions?

Edit: Oh, and it should be big. I'm not looking for portability. Besides, lugging equipment around builds character ;P

I'm also not apposed to passive cooling, but that's only assuming it works.

I bought a Cryo, same as some others have posted, it doesn't lower temps hardly at all.

I even bought a power adapter from radio shack to bump up the voltage and increase fan speed, and actually saw temps go higher, it offset the airflow balance.

Then I removed the top vent wire mesh, and it helped slightly but still not nearly as good as it should be.

Going to order a Zalman NC-2000 now and see how that works.

    For my 7811FX i bought the ThermalTake Tai-Chi M+.
    http://www.dvhardware.net/review99_tai-chi-m.html
It lowered the hdd temps littlebit, but not the CPU or GPU temps. Temps were even higher, because the upper corner feet will be over the edge of the coolerpad, and because of that the intake fans of laptop are almost flat against the coolerpad, and so can't take air in. And 1 more problem, the coolerpad has holes at the centre of the cooler, but no holes at side or top, so no direct airflow to laptop fans. I think of modding the cooler, by drilling holes to entire pad, and replasing the 70mm fans with bigger and more powerful ones. Pluss side of the cooler is, that its portable. Can fold it together and put it in your packpak.

    I have the NC2000.

Idle and on I get 39-40C with the GPU without the GPU fan kicking in. The CPU is 24-30C again without the CPU fan kicking in. The ACPI hovers about 39-41C. HDD is about 33C.

Idle and off I get 42-51C on the GPU with the GPU fan kicking in to cool it. The CPU 27-35C again fans kicking in. ACPI 42-47C and lastly disk 40C

Under load there is little difference other than the disk stays still about 35C
