I have kind of being following the Gateway P series, a side from CPU power and amount of RAM, I can't seem to distinguish the difference between these models6831 , P6860, and P171x. Aside from the ones I mentioned are there any other hardware difference that I should be aware of? Thanks!
-
They all have the same case and motherboard, but the 6860 has 64 Bit Vista
-
171X lacks bluetooth.
-
Not true, the P-171x fx does have blue tooth, and I belive all P FX series do. The main diffrence between the P-6000 fx series and the P-171 fx and the P-172 fx is the screen res, check out this link to see the diffrences;

Thanks guys! Flynnaz that link is very helpful!

OT: you like Utada Hikaru?

The P172S FX doesn't have bluetooth.
Neither does the P172X. Which I assumed he was talking about when he mentioned P171X. Wasn't particularly sure which model he was talking about.
Another additional feature that the P172X/P171X FX has is the fingerprint reader. -
-
Firstly, I was talking about the P172X, not P172X FX as I explained.
Reason : You did specify P171X in your original post. Not P171X FX.
Secondly, if you check here.
http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668033.php
You will see no mention of bluetooth, but in the P172X FX page, you will. Go figure.
Lastly, Flynnaz posted that. Not nirvana. -
Secondly, arguing about bluetooth is just pointless, they are both Gateway website, and that one page might just have less info of another page.
Lastly, *FUDGE*, thanks for point out my mistake. Sorry Flynnaz. -
Its ok, I knew what you meant
-
FX = the 8800M GTS equipped models.
Actually, my point was that the Gateway page for the P172X FX shows that bluetooth is available, but the page for the P172S FX doesn't. Which is rather odd. You would assume that they would mention it as well. Bluetooth is a pretty nifty feature I would like in my laptop. If the 172S FX doesn't have Bluetooth, it's going to be an poorer buy compared to the P6860FX than it already is.
However, as we've noticed, it is mentioned in the overall P-Series page. Which is rather odd, to say the least.
When I said go figure earlier, it's precisely that. Gateway states both, which is the truth? Unless someone owning a P172S FX mentions it, we're SOL.
So those with a P172S FX, start posting. -
When I talked to my gateway rep a month ago, he said something about the P-172s fx not having blue tooth, I would think this to be not true for the simple reason, all the P FX series use the same hardware except hard drives, fingerprint reader and LCD screens, it would cost gateway more to exclude blue tooth from one model. Also if they show it on their website, then it better have it if I was a customer.

I would imagine the Bluetooth consists of a single bluetooth unit that wouldn't be very hard to attach/re-attach. My guess would be that it would be cheaper for them to not include it. Since all of the laptops are put together in the same way, they just have to skip a single step for the P172S FX.
Nonetheless, someone with a P172S FX needs to speak up. -
Well hear you go, right from the horses mouth;
Emma joined the incident.

flynnaz says:
I just have a quik question, does the P-172 fx come with blue tooth?
flynnaz says:
I mean the P-172s fx
Emma says:
that model does not have bluetooth
flynnaz says:
Ok, thank you -
There you go. Thanks, flynnaz.
Did you mention that the page was wrong? They should get on fixing that. -
No, I didn't, they are kinda bad about updating their pages, I would use that for a discount
you can get about a 10% discount right now, or hagel with them about the best buy model. -
My P172S FX, is on its way. It will probably be here on 05/15/08.
The sales reps at Gateway, basically go to the Gateway website. So they are reading what we see. When my P172S FX comes in I will post whether or not it has bluetooth. I can't wait to get it, I am on a Gateway Mx6121 right now and it feels like an antique. -
There's a owner of a 172S FX mentioning that he doesn't have bluetooth in his 172S in another thread.

OK I just got my P172S FX today and It has a bluetooth marked button, but no bluetooth. I must say that, that doesn't bother me, one bit! This is an awesome notebook. I love it.

The image of an irate P172S FX user hitting the bluetooth button and complaining about his bluetooth being broken makes me smile.
What is the difference between these model?
