In the past my gateway 6864fx laptop has been fine in terms of my gaming needs. it has only been lately that i felt that i need more power now for the newer games coming out for example battlefield bad company 2. Does anyone know the best possible CPU i can upgrade this with and also what the best possible video card upgrade is available?

To my knowledge, assuming that the 6864 is just like the 6860, the best CPUs you can get are the X9000 and the T9500 (which has a locked multiplier). Video cards are not replaceable in P-series (and probably most Gateway) machines. However, some people have achieved GPU and graphics memory overclocks of 20% or more. If you get the T9500 to save money you may one day be able to overclock it. One person has successfully done it and has yet to make a guide.

The 6864 isn't really like the 6860fx but it can use the same CPUs. Honestly what is holding you back in the 6864fx is the ati HD 2600 GPU. Might be time for a new laptop if you want to play games like bad company 2.
