I was wondering, for all those people that have had the overheating/freezing problem when playing games or otherwise stressing the system, which BB did you guys purchase the laptop from?
Could it be that a batch of these laptops have a defect in the heatsink and/or gpu die packaging/cooling? It doesn't sound like a driver/OS issue because from what I've read, most users that have exchanged their unit now have no issues with the replacement.
I'm in the Bay Area, CA and would appreciate anyone with info regarding their P-7811 FX (working or not). It would really help me decide whether I should pick one up.
Thanks!

I got my from the Union City store. My gpu fan fluctuates a lot, but it keeps the temps cool according to GPU-Z. I am downloading 3Dmarks atm, and I gonna run it a few times.

Purchased 1 -San Marcos, Texas - No lockups , But Screen Not 100%.

My 1st one (the lemon) and the replacement (good) were both from the BB in Plano, TX.

Got mine (a good one) from BB in Bangor, Maine.
I want to mention the "post factory stress test" these machines go through: they get boxed and palletized, jammed in a container, and may bake in the sun for days before being loaded none too gently onto a ship or plane and brought to the US; from there it doesn't start to be "kid glove" treatment as they get trucked to warehouses, stacked on shelves, etc. before finally being sold to you. My 7811 box literally fell apart in my hands as I was taking the computer out: all the glue at every point had failed, leading me to believe it had sat somewhere very humid & very hot for a nice long time. That more of these guys don't come through with "issues" is really a minor miracle, and problem machines may have nothing to do with QC at the factory. -
I have only rebooted the system once since Friday (after applying some udpates) and since then no issues at all. Its a great laptop!

what day did you buy yours on? -
-
Bought mine at a BB near Los Angeles. I just started getting the lockup issue last night after having it for barely two weeks. It locked up twice during some heavy WoW sessions. I'm guessing I'll need to retun it. What a bummer.

Pasadena, CA. 1st one a dud.
2nd one so far so good.

I bought mine online, the box was in great shape. When idling everything sits right at 35-40c. No undervolting... as of yet.
I've noticed the fan thing too. It seems like it turns on the fan and the fan is temperature controlled so it boosts it wayyyy up to 100% when starting the fan then it reads the temp and goes down. Then the fan will turn off and repeat the cycle. So the only way to fix this would be to have the fan stay on at all times. Its not that loud when the fan is idling anyways. -

I picked mine up on the 16th.. I wonder if the store room has climate control? I wouldn't think it would, though i think it should and if i remember correctly we did have a few humid as hell days...
*shrugs*
but truly, my box is still together in my closet.
odd to find someone else around bangor on this board... let alone someone who bought the same computer. What do you use this beast for anyway? -
Thanks for all the responses, it seems that there are no definitive links as to the location of dud/lemon 7811's. The screen issue (ghosting) seems random too. Strange.
Today I just went to a Best Buy in Oakland, CA and their display model didn't have any ghosting. But I did notice that there was quite a bit of flex on the perimeter of the screen. If I press on the screen slightly, ghosting (or rather light leakage) would occur. Otherwise it looked pretty solid. I couldn't stress test the machine though to figure if overheating/freezing was a problem (obviously). Only way to find out is buy one and put it through it's paces. What's the best way to stress the video card without having to install a huge game. Would counterstrike source be a good game to see if the laptop freezes? -
Any else notice their laptops running about 5c hotter on the battery?

Is there anyone else in the bay area that bought their 7811 from, Union City, Emeryville/Oakland, San Francisco, Colma, Pleasant Hill, Pinole or San Carlos?
-
Well I guess the fluctuating GPU fan that sounds like a choo choo train is normal. And as I stated, I got in at the Union City store. When I was there on Sunday, they had 7 (now 6 for I bought one).

Returned first one after one night due to screen issues, and the CPU downclocking cause of temps. 2nd one is in the signature you see below, and all is good. Great setup. Jacksonville, FL - USA
EDIT: P.O.S had a BSOD when I was asleep last night, guess I'm part of the group now.
oh..anyone cheked for IRQ conflicts?
Where'd you buy your (freezing) 7811 from??
