Hey - I've read this entire forum as well as the entire eMachines forum  and gleaned some really awesome info from it that I'm going to use to try to convince BB to come good on the 3 year "NO LEMON" PSP. I am convinced my machine is a lemon. I've had ongoing video issues since the day I got it back from the cracked hinge repair a week after purchase, I've had wireless NIC issues, a dead HD, and now my machine is all banged up and unstable since it's been out for repair 5 times. I don't know why they are dragging their feet, but I'm making my case this week.

So, I know that Gateway's 74XX were comparable to the eMachines 68XX. I'm just wondering which model specifically is the sister to the M6811?

I have found a couple somewhat comparable Gateway machines available at BB but they aren't EXACTLY comparable, since it's been 1.5 years. They have upgraded ram and hdd, different video, and it appears that the one closest in spec to my machine comes with XP Media Center. Not sure how I feel about that.

Anyone with any insight who wants to share, I'd really appreciate it. This is a great machine, but I purchased the highest spec machine I could get AND the PSP to try and protect myself from this very situation. My machine has been down 7 of the last 18 months. I don't trust the system any more and I'm convinced that some of my problems are due to the fact that it's been shipped back and forth so much and taken apart so many times. I don't want to spend a week getting my system settings back the way I like them, burn a recovery CD, and dump my data back on just to have the machine crash and burn again.

Thanks for reading the rant, if you got this far.

    Peace.

Heh, good luck with getting BestBuy to stick to their word. I sent mine in for another hinge repair for the fourth time. 3 times they told me that they would call me, all 3 times I ended up calling them (2 of which times, they told me to wait to talk to the manager). My laptop was in for about 2 weeks, and when I finally get ahold of the manager, he said that my motherboard needed to be replaced! $280, I decided to walk on it because everything works perfectly. I think that they said to replace the motherboard because my headphone jack had a tiny chunk of plastic missing. Everything holds up well though. I told them that it is BS that they are that strict on a notebook when I bought mine with scratches on the lid. Not to mention, one of the times my computer came back repaired, they gave me a brand new lid. A lid with the NEWER Gateway logo :) It was in near perfect condition, but when I sent it in, I read the sheets that they filled out for me. Condition said: Scratches on lid, dusty. I thought that was weird. When I finally picked it up UNREPAIRED, I saw buff marks, 2 deep scratches and a black corner (like it was dropped!). Anyways, here I am writing on my laptop with very loose hinges and scratches on the lid. While I can live with it (after all, this machine has been nothing but great to me), I dispise BestBuy and their Geek Squad. My life lesson: Don't buy expensive things from retail stores.

If you decided to skip through my rant, here is a simple answer to your question: I am not 100% sure, but I think the Gateway 7422GX resembles your notebook. I'm questioning the 80gb harddrive though.
Anywhat, welcome to the forum and good luck with bestbuy. If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask :)

Thanks, Hellman. That's about what I'm expecting from BB, though I still have hope because the local store manager doesn't blow corporate smoke up my butt when I deal with him. When I originally bought the machine (in FL, nonetheless) and had my first cracked hinge issue, BB was like, "Bring it in." We were like, "Yeah, right. It's a minimum 3 hour drive (which we have now done many times since it's out of Manufacturer's warranty) to a store, and it's a 36 hour drive to the store of purchase."

So we dealt directly with eMachines for the first year. They were awesome - free ship, fast service, friendly tech support. Although they never fixed the video problems I was having...

Anyway, we've sent to eMachines 3 times, and Best Buy twice. This will be the third time. I'm just sick of the constant issues and unreliability. I was soooo hoping this would be the computer that made me get along with MS Windows.

Unrelated, but I *still* hate Windows. XP just made me hate it more. I'm a geek and it was REALLY annoying to have to find back doors to basic administrative functionality that I was used to accessing directly.

I have been contemplating a unix install but still looking for a few answers for drivers, and I'm new to building kernals. Once I get all my questions answered I think I will switch over. This is only if I am forced to keep a Win machine. I was able to use a bootable slax CD to dump my HD over to a USB HD before sending my machine in for repair last time. The HD fried and the OS wouldn't load. It only took me 15 minutes to figure out Slax. It was a beautiful thing to see those happy shoes on the desktop.

I plan to make the switch to Apple, otherwise.

Thanks for your insight. I loved your rant. I'm almost certain mine has been dropped during shipping at some point. And it always has new scratches when I get it back from repair.

Ugh. Wish me luck! I would like to leave the store with a new computer. ;)

Oh, you have no idea how much I wanted a new computer! I had been planing it out weeks before I took it in :D It's hard to find something that compares to my computer at a price like this. I was looking at an HP DV5035 (turion ml40, X200, 1gb -- which is substantially less than this).

That's interesting. I'm more of a Windows guy. I've never had any problems with XP, and look forward to Vista. Then again, I'm not really more than an average user. I browse internet, listen to music (constantly), photoshop, and watch movies. Occasionally, I will play light games (GTA: SA was the farthest I ever got :D), so I don't really need a grade A computer, or a professional OS.
About the service, I love Gateway support. They have been great. It is BestBuy who really aggrivates me. When I brought my notebook home, Gateway had left a nice little sheet in my notebook about a reason why it wasn't repaired. The reason: My notebook was left on hold for more than 14 days. Thanks, BestBuy, for staying up-to-date on my computer.
Anyways, I do wish you great luck. I really hope that your experience with BestBuy is better than mine.
    Best wishes
